Traffic Doors

Traffic doors are doors that swing both inward and outward. Though they serve as a barrier between two areas, they are designed to easily allow hands-free traffic in either direction, thus the name.

They are also called impact doors, because their design is oriented toward their being opened by impact. Additional names for these doors include double-acting doors, swinging doors, sheet doors and bump doors, among other things.

INTERIOR DOORS

There are a great variety of options available when installing traffic doors, and the type of impact, traffic and function of the door must be considered as well as the aesthetics of the application.

They are especially excellent for high-traffic areas that still require a clear differentiation between them. For example, one often sees traffic doors between the kitchen and dining room of restaurants.

These doors permit wait staff with their hands full to easily pass in and out, while at the same time discouraging restaurant patrons from wandering into the kitchen. The doors will serve as a visual, sonic or thermal barrier between the two areas.

Double acting traffic doors allow you to speed the movement of people and stuff from one area to another by eliminating the process of stopping, setting aside whatever you're carrying, opening the door, and manually closing it behind you. You just bump your way through the doors. They automatically return to a closed position after you pass.

Before purchasing your traffic door, consider the size of the finished opening-width and height measured from inside the frame. Also consider the type and volume of traffic.

Is there an airflow difference between the two areas? Does the door need a gasket? What is the primary purpose of the door---is it a visual barrier, or should it control temperature?

Also consider whether it will be subjected to difficult conditions and abuse. In spite of the fact that doors swing both ways, because there will be a 'finished' or primary side to these doors, and thus these doors will either be left-handed or right-handed to someone facing them from this side. If the hinges are on the right, it's right handed, and hinges on the left make it a left handed door.

Traffic doors are pretty much never rated as fire doors regardless of the material they are constructed from. The reason for this is very straightforward-traffic doors do not latch.

In addition to business applications, especially in restaurants, retail establishments and commercial and government offices, traffic doors can be used in the home, for example to separate the kitchen from a dining room.

Compared to doors with electric, hydraulic or pneumatic closing mechanisms, traffic doors are easier to install and operate. Additionally, they save electricity, keeping your expenses lower. Traffic doors require less time and expense to maintain or repair than more complex doors as well.

When equipped with a full perimeter door to jamb seal, a double acting traffic door can help control air, moisture, dust and dirt particle movement while at the same time permitting easy access through the door.

If your interior wood doors are made of solid wood, they will carry with the some unique texture. Moreover, the colors will be such that you can never achieve the same décor and textures with other materials. Sometimes the designers get the wood stained or painted to enhance their artistic flavor and beauty. Others make them glazed so that they look extremely smooth and very nice touching. Interior doors are normally free from chances of scratches and dents as they are less exposed to external attack either from nature or human beings in comparison to exterior doors. Proper sealing of the surface of doors could work wonders for their strength and durability.

In result your monthly bills would be lower, especially during the winter seasons. Interior Design Themes

Let me start the article by answering this "simple" question. "What is interior design?". Interior design is the process of visualising or "designing" the appearance of a room or other interior space. The practice draws up many technical, analytical and creative skills.

During the Interior design process, many things are taken into account from colour, arrangement and theming all coming together to make the final product.

INTERIOR DOORS

Theming often follows period styles such as; minimalist, gothic, Victorian, Islamic, Feng Sui, country, tropical, western, modern, and is the way of describing the overall look you are trying to achieve in your interior. You will recognise certain themes as you read through magazines or visit show homes and you will naturally gravitate towards those styles which best suit your personality, just as you gravitate towards clothes which take your fancy.

Let's take a look at some of these themes in a little more detail.

Minimalist

Minimalist interior design, as the name suggests, uses very little clutter to create the final look. Walls are generally painted a uniform colour and are not adorned with pictures and ornaments. Simple lighting is mounted into the ceilings so there are no fancy chandeliers or other light fittings to grab your attention.

Rooms with the minimalist theming, however can sometimes feel very cold, uncomfortable and impersonal.

Tropical

Not a widely discussed theme, Tropical theming uses greens and earthy earthy tones along with lighter colours such as whites and creams. Whites are ideal if you live in warmer climes as you will be able to afford the coolness that white gives off, but for those of you who have to put up with the long London winter should go for creams to bring a bit of warmth to the room. Plants are a must have for a tropical theme, lush green palm trees being the ultimate accessory.

African

When you think of Africa, no doubt earthy tones come into you head browns, beiges, yellows and oranges. If you are looking to create an African feel in your interior you want to bear this in mind. African themes are all about natural colours. Think clean cream walls, dark brown hardwood floor, dark beige couches with big puffy orange cushions, the sunset coming in through thin beige curtains. Remember to think beige!

There are hundreds of different interior design themes out there so go out to some show houses and have a look in some of the many magazines on offer to get an idea of how you would like your room to look and get in there and get your hands wet.

Selecting Interior Door Hardware For Your Home

Door hardware includes all the hardware necessary to make your door function. This includes the lock, door knobs or handles and hinges. Door hardware adds to the beauty of your home and makes a statement about you. In a new home the builder's designer will probably ask you to select the style and finish of your door hardware first. Why? Other hardware selections (faucets, shower fixtures, light fixtures) will be coordinated with the door hardware. Typically, if you choose oil rubbed bronze window latches you will also have oil rubbed bronze door hinges, locks and door knobs or handles. The proper selection of hardware will add cohesiveness to the design of the home.

interior doors home depot

Once you decide on the hardware finish you will then need to choose the functionality of the door knobs for each room. Bathroom and bedrooms will typically use a privacy lock to allow the occupants of that room to lock the door from the inside. If you are doing the installation be sure you place the lock on the inside of the room to prevent anyone from being locked in the room and place the unlocking key somewhere on the outside of the room where it can be easily accessed in case of an emergency. (On top of the door molding is a typical location.) Passageway locksets are typically for doors that do not require a privacy lock, such as closets, doors to stairways, laundry rooms, mud rooms or hallways. Dummy door knobs can also be used to provide a handle to pull open a door that is held shut by a magnet rather than a lock - these are typically used on closets with double doors.

INTERIOR DOORS

Beyond the functionality you can also choose to use door knobs or door handles. Door handles are generally easier to operate (even dogs learn to open them) and add a European look. Door knobs can be more elegant especially if you opt for crystal door knobs.

If you are building a custom home you will also choose the interior door styles. Your door hardware style and finish should be complimentary to the door style. As an example: six panel oak doors with oil rubbed bronze hardware and crystal door knobs will give a new home an older feel especially when matched with oil rubbed bronze schoolhouse ceiling light fixtures and oil rubbed bronze faucets.

If you are restoring an older home you may want to use restoration hardware to maintain the look and feel of the home when it was first constructed. One caution here is that you will need to make sure the locks are appropriate for the thickness of the door as this varied in older construction.

While you are going through the selection process make sure you take your time and think through all the items that need to be chosen, let your personal style and character come through and have fun!

How to Seal Brick and Other Masonry Buildings

Water entering a masonry substrate can cause your home to have interior leaks or exterior staining, spalling and efflorescence. Usually the masonry substrate can absorb the liquid water and release it again when it stops raining. However, the masonry could still have staining and efflorescence.

lowes interior doors

In modern home construction, masonry is used as a veneer. That is, homes and buildings that have brick, stone, stucco or some other masonry exterior are traditional wood or steel buildings on the inside. The veneer is just a cosmetic look. Therefore, improper building practices can cause leaks into the house or around windows and doors. At the more extreme circumstance, improper building practices can cause the structure of the building to become damaged due to water.

LOWES INTERIOR DOORS

Efflorescence

Efflorescence is the whitish staining that is seen on the surface of brick and masonry. This is actually the accumulation of salts from the brick itself. What happens is that the water inside of the brick dissolves the natural salts that are present from the manufacturing of the brick. Then the water evaporates to the surrounding air, leaving the salts on the surface to be seen.

Spalling

Spalling is when the brick or masonry substrate flakes. This can be caused by water freezing inside of the brick and expanding. The expansion causes the brick to break and flake.

Now, to waterproof brick or masonry it must be sealed against water penetration. But be careful. A surface sealer such as acrylics, silicones or epoxies can actually trap water vapor from the inside of the building from getting out. As mentioned before, this can cause spalling.

Brick pavers and concrete sidewalks or driveways come under attack from deicing salts. These salts do extensive damage to the substrate. By sealing the surface, the salts will not be able to do damage to the substrates.

The best way to waterproof and seal a brick or other masonry substrate is with a penetrating siloxane based sealer. The siloxane actually penetrates into the masonry substrate and chemically bonds to it. This fills the pores and prevents liquid water from penetrating. However, siloxanes are 100% breathable. So water vapor from the interior can still escape from the brick. This will reduce spalling.

Siloxanes have the added benefit of not coloring or darkening the substrate. They are clear and do not leave a glossy sheen. Since siloxanes penetrate the masonry and are not on the surface, the original texture of the surface is maintained. And the penetration into the masonry substrate actually protects them from the elements. They will be long lived and give years of maintenance free performance.

Etched Glass Doors For Interior Beauty

Are you looking for wonderful glass doors for your home or office? In the past, it's always been sturdy, heavy wooden doors that have gotten all the attention; the heavier and more elaborate the wood, the fancier your house was considered to be.

interior doors with glass

But that has changed as the modern day has dawned, and simplicity and elegance were valued over old-fashioned fanciness. Now, glass doors are more popular than ever, because of their contemporary sophistication and their ability to allow light in everywhere to give a much more open, warmer feel to the atmosphere of a room, house, store, or office.

INTERIOR DOORS

One type of glass door in particular is the etched glass door, and these etched glass doors are essentially designs created by frosting glass. Frosted glass results in a translucent glass window, which is nice because it allows more privacy without blocking the light.

Translucent frosted glass can be used for showers and office doors-or, if you want to be a bit fancier, you can put designs on the frosted glass and make it into a glass etching, which is truly beautiful and complex.

Glass etchings are usually created by sandblasting glass in several different stages in order to create different depths of translucency if you want a more three dimensional picture (it's somewhat like shading in a drawing, and the results are very beautiful).

Popularly, etched glass is usually made up of a semi-translucent picture with a clear background. This gives the glass a nice, elegant look while still maintaining transparency and allowing plenty of light through.

The alternative is to use an etched piece of glass with a frosted background, though It's recommended if your frosted background is significantly lighter than the actual etching to make the contrast more apparent.

If you have a garden, then consider using etched glass doors as the door to your garden; it will lend both an old-fashioned and modernistic style to your beautiful garden.

The actual process of etching glass is a little more complicated. There are several modern ways of frosting the glass in that way; there's sandblasting, which is slightly less accurate, and also etching via the Leptat acid process.

The sandblasted frosted glass gives a more abrasive look, while the Leptat acid process creates a crystalline surface with much texture that is deeply etched. The Leptat acid process originated in a Czechoslovakian glass exhibit that was at the World's Fair in Osaka, Japan.

The Leptat etching process is often considered the more expensive and more elegant of the two, because instead of simply creating a rough sheen over the glass, the Leptat acid process creates a beautiful reflective surface that is etched and carved as if it were an intricate gem, and light reflects off the Leptat etched glass from many different angles.

If you'd like, you can create your own glass etching designs using etching cream, though these may not be as beautiful as etchings through the Leptat etching process. However, homemade glass etching can be fun and is safe as long as you take precautions not to allow the glass to cut your hands.
