Interior Decorating With Picture Frames

There are many ways to decorate the interior of your home, none the least of which is with picture frames. Picture frames have the unique ability to personalize a house in more ways than one. You can share with friends, family and visitors your memories and cherished moments.

There are literally dozens of different picture frames to choose from including:

Collage picture frames Digital picture frames Magnetic picture frames Shadow boxes Wholesale picture frames

You don't have to spend a fortune to decorate your home using picture frames. In fact cheap picture frames or discount picture frames look just as classy and elegant as expensive ones. One thing you do need to do before decorating your home however is stock up on picture framing supplies. Be sure you get any matte, mounting equipment and other items you need so you can do your decorating in one fell swoop.

Steps For Decorating Your Home

There are several steps you can follow to ensure your decorating goes well. Here are a few tips for saving time and decorating efficiently:

First inventory all the photographs and memorabilia you have. Separate groups of photos and memento's into categories. Some ideas include vacation shots, weddings, birthdays, children etc. Survey your home. Take some time out to decide what walls and areas of the home you would like to display your pictures in. Stairwells are a popular choice for displaying photographs. You can also use wall space in the living room, dining room and bedrooms. Hallways are also a great area for displaying pictures and frames, as are foyers. Don't forget, you won't have to mount all frames, like digital picture frames. These picture frames look great as stand-alones. You can decorate your office, bedroom and den with them. Assess the number of frames you need relative to the photos you have. Decide the style frames you want in each area of the house. Try to match the style of the frame to the theme of the photograph and then to the decor of the room.
Tips For Hanging Your Pictures

Before you start hanging your pictures, be sure you gather all your supplies together. You will need at the minimum your frames, pictures, hanging wire, a hammer, pencil and some wall screws. If you can, enlist the assistance of a housemate or family member to help you hang pictures. They will help you decide if your pictures are placed correctly and hung evenly.

If you don't have someone to assist you, you can use a piece of paper or cardboard cut to the exact size of the picture. Take this "pattern" and tape it to the place you want to hang the picture. That way you can move it about easily to see exactly where you want it without having to put a bunch of holes in your wall! This works particularly well if you want to group several pictures together.

Keep in mind when hanging picture frames for decorations, you want each photo to add to the room, not detract from it. You don't need to cover your walls in hundreds of pictures to make a statement. Rather select a few key pieces that will accent the room. If you have a group of pictures that are too large to display at once, you can rotate them seasonally.

Think about the room's layout. This includes other accessories in the room such as a table, TV, lamp and more. Decide where the best place to put your picture is. Then hold it up to the wall and experiment with different angles. Not all pictures need to be centered in the middle of the wall. Figure out where the picture looks best relative to the other furniture in the room. Have your companion help you decide the best spot for your picture.

Now you can hang your picture. You want to make sure your picture is even. Measure the distance of your picture from each corner to the edge of the wall. You can use a tape measure if that helps. Mark your spot with a pencil once you decide what place the picture is most even.

Most pictures hang well using ordinary picture hooks. You should have a supply of these readily available. The bottom of the picture hook should land at the spot you marked for your hole. If you need to hang heavier pictures you should use nails and not hooks. You can use two instead of one to provide added support.

The most important thing to remember when decorating is to have fun. Remember you can rotate out pictures during certain times of the month or year. Decorating with picture frames is one of the easiest ways to accent your home in a loving and personal manner.

White Bedroom Furniture and Interior Design

Selecting furniture pieces for a white bedroom is a fun and challenging task. You have to explore the possibilities of making the color white an attractive focal point for your entire design. The furniture pieces can either embrace white as their finishing color or emphasize it by taking on more neutral colors so that a brilliant white hue can come out. The route to take is to experiment with materials and finishes in order to find the perfect blend, the blend that will awe a spectator and would make him reconsider the role of pale colors as necessary elements or more accurately, a perfect element to use in order to create beauty from the underrated and the simple.

interior doors home depot

A traditional white painted bed with lacy pillow cases and floral patterned sheets and comforter alongside light oak side tables is a consistent white bedroom furniture set. You can never go wrong with a safe choice like that, but if you add a light green closet cabinet with distressed paint finish, you might think that would not work, but if this closet can have paneled doors with white painted within the panels, then you could probably reconsider your previous perception. It is all a matter of subtlety in infusing colors. White paint that is mixed with a small amount of red will create the color pink. To add pink in decor pieces in the bedroom such as throws and pillows will not turn out to be a regrettable mistake. Instead it can be a welcome addition to the white-dominated bedroom. Using metallic hues such as silver, chrome and gold could also enliven a stark white furniture pieces. If these colors were incorporated in the frames of the bed or in the legs and arms of the chairs and benches, then an interesting blend of colors will emerge. However, these colors, being unobtrusive, cannot take the attention away from the overall whimsical whiteness of the interior.

INTERIOR DOORS

White bedroom furniture pieces with the right shades of finishing touches can bring a remarkable and awe-inspiring effect to the interior. Traditional white bedrooms with elaborate decors on walls, ceilings and furnishings can make you dream of far off places and 18th century romanticism while a modern white interior can awaken you from that dream and transport you to the marvelous world of the future. There is just something powerful and gripping about an all white interior. It never ceases to amaze with its simplicity and it never loses its individual luster when placed beside a colorful interior. It just never falters, holding its own beauty like a flaming torch for the world to see and experience.

Dental Clinic Interior Design

A warm and welcoming ambiance in the reception area of a dental clinic makes a world of difference for reluctant patients. They should feel comfortable and relaxed when they visit the dentist so that they will come back on a regular basis in order to take proper care of their teeth and dental hygiene. Proper dental clinic interior design is responsible for the harmonious and people-oriented environment in all the areas of the dental clinic. From the reception area to the treatment rooms, a feeling of comfort and ease should be consistent, and all the areas should be treated with the right finishes and furnishings so that an informal and amiable relationship can be generated for the patients, the dentists and the guests.

interior doors

The reception area of a dental clinic can be all sorts of things except frightening. It should have a small lounge area with comfortable sofas and armchairs upholstered in bright colors that perk up the spirit such as yellow and red. Dark and dull colors in paint and floor materials should be avoided because they exude an impersonal, gloomy and sometimes authoritative and too intimidating ambiance that will not at all help appease the hesitant and inhibited emotions of the patients that are waiting in line.

INTERIOR DOORS

The patients must be occupied with dynamic designs that will make them avoid thinking about actually sitting in the dentist's chair. Things such as thought-provoking art pieces, a play pen for kids and a decorative bookcase with informational books and magazines that they can leaf through are appropriate. The treatment area should be sanitary and it can be painted a very relaxing pastel color such as baby pink, powder blue or lime green. This will help patients feel comfortable while sitting or lying down in the dental chair with murals of butterflies and flowers on the ceiling and the walls of the treatment room.

There must be room for a sink and preparation surface, as well as ample space for the dentist and her assistant to navigate around the room. The dental chair can be situated beside a wall as long as the other side is bare and spacious. The key to a successful dental interior design is to provide feasibility in layout and efficiency in systematic organization of the various areas. Even the personal office of the dentist should be given fair attention because it also has to be a professional space that is still sensitive to the needs of the patient.

Shop For the Different Styles of Interior Wood Doors

A lot of home owners are in doubt of what interior wood doors can do. Thus, they would skip them in favor of others, such as glass. What they don't know is that they are not only going to be able to save hundreds of dollars - they can last for so many years and require very little maintenance-but there are also wide variety of doors that you can choose from.

6 panel interior doors

What styles are available?

INTERIOR DOORS

There are a number of styles for interior wood doors that are available in the market. These include the following:

1. Flush doors. If you're looking for cheaper interior wood doors, you may want to consider flush doors. Manufacturing companies can produce them with fewer materials and less labor. Thus, they can offer them at a very affordable price. Moreover, they are covered with veneer, which actually does something good to the interior doors. With them, they are given protective coating. They become more resistant to dents and scratches, and their life span can extend for more than 10 years. The flush doors can also be hollow or solid core. The hollow ones are more lightweight, but they are also less durable than the latter.

2. Panel doors. Panel interior wood doors are very easy to detect. The entire door can be divided into different sections, the designs of which can range from simple to elaborate. You can also be more flexible with your design choices when it comes to panel doors. You have stiles and rails. Both can allow you to add plywood, solid hardwood, or even glass right into the panels. With stiles, you can run the additional designs vertically all throughout the door at every side. Rails can go across the panel interior wood doors.

3. Hinged doors. Interior wood doors can also be attached to hinges, so you can add more motion to them-you can make them swing. These doors are also very practical, especially for those who are always in a hurry. They don't need to constantly turn the knobs every time they want to go in. You can usually find hinged interior wooden doors in kitchens. They also add more uniqueness into your house. When installing a hinged interior wood door, you need to have at least 2 or 3 hinges to attach the door frame. Hinged doors can also be made up of one huge door or two smaller doors of similar sizes.

Residential Painting - Painting Solutions For Common Interior Painting Problems

There are a myriad of problems that can occur with interior painted surfaces. Some happen to a newly painted surface and others happen over time. The best way to handle these unfortunate painting problems is to be aware of how to take preventative measures before you begin applying new paint. The following are a couple of the more common problems and how to correct or prevent their return.

6 panel interior doors

There is something that commonly occurs called 'blocking' when two surfaces that have been painted end up being stuck together like the door jamb sticking to the door. This can happen because there has not been enough time for the paint to dry completely before the door or windows were closed. It can also be the result of using an inferior grade of gloss or semi-gloss paint. Using a better grade of gloss or semi-gloss acrylic latex paint is an easy solution. The lower grade latex paint, especially in humid conditions, does not have enough block resistance to prevent blocking from happening.

INTERIOR DOORS

Burnishing is something that happens when there is a lot of brushing or rubbing against the painted surface. It causes a glossy or high sheen to appear. Flat paint in areas that have high traffic can get rubbed so much that the once dull painted surface gets glossy spots. If there is a lot of spot cleaning in this high-traffic area then this can cause burnishing. When a piece of furniture is rubbing against the flat paint surface, shiny areas will appear. If the paint that was used does not have scrub or stain resistance then this is the forerunner of the burnishing effect.

Painted areas such as window sills, trim and doors, need a higher grade of latex paint to endure the excessive use and cleaning. Also, areas that have high use or traffic and need to be spot cleaned often should not be painted with a flat paint but rather a gloss or semi-gloss. These paints are easily cleaned by using a sponge or soft cloth and a cleanser that is not abrasive. If the washed area is rinsed with clean water it will not end up have the burnishing problem.

A problem that happens as soon as the paint has been applied is called sagging. It is where the paint looks like it is drooping and the coat of paint then looks very uneven. There are several reasons this can happen. It can be the result of paint that has been thinned out too much or it can be from using too much paint or too thick of a coat of paint. Using a spray gun to apply your paint and holding it too close to the surface can also cause sagging. Weather conditions like humidity or really cold conditions will also make the paint droop.

To correct this problem while the paint is still wet, quickly reroll it or brush it to spread the excess of paint out evenly before it dries. If it is too late and the paint has dried you can sand the area lightly and then put on a new coat with high grade paint after the residue of the sanding is removed. To avoid this type of problem you need to use the paint as intended and not heap the paint onto the surface.

Home Security Checklist - 10 Simple Steps to Securing Your House Interior - Residential Security

Homeowners can stop most Residential Break and Enters (B & E). B & E offences are perpetrated mostly by unsophisticated criminals who seize immediate opportunities. Unfortunately, opportunities provided by homeowners themselves.

interior doors

Specific things (opportunities) the potential offender looks for:

INTERIOR DOORS

1) Homes which appear unoccupied (i.e. Owner/renter on vacation) - lawns not mowed, newspapers piled at the front door, mail accumulation, no lights at times (usually night) when a family might be expected to be at home;

2) Homes and neighborhoods where the owners/renters appears to be at work - mail in mailbox, packages at door, advertising flyers left at front door. A simple act of ringing the doorbell or knocking on the door can confirm this;

3) Homes in upscale neighborhoods (more to steal);

4) Open garages (entry point to the house, place to hide or steal contents);

5) An easy method of entry offering concealment - fenced-in or hedged back yards, rear or side doors/windows completely or partially shielded from view by fences, screened patios, shrubs, sheds, basement window wells;

6) Easy entry points - unlocked doors/windows, easy-to-open doors/windows (sliding windows or patio doors that can be lifted out of their tracks), breakable glass in or near doors that could allow door to be unlocked, doors that can easily be forced open using a foot, plastic card, crowbar or chisel (poor quality locks or poor installation).

Here are 10 ways to Target Harden your Dwelling whether you are away for the day or for a lengthy trip:

1) Create Light and Sound. Use automatic timers for your lights inside and motion detector lighting outside your house. New timers have a random on/off time and battery backup in case of power outages. Make it look like your house is occupied both during the day as well as at night. Attach lights and radios to these timers.

2) Leave a key with a trusted friend or neighbor so they can check, at least every 48 hours, on your home. Some home insurance policies stipulate such regular checks of your home or you void your insurance coverage. Consider a house sitter.

3) Create that lived-in look. For lengthy trips away from home, have a neighbor park a car in your driveway, keep your front door clear of newspapers/brochures and mow grass/remove snow.

4) Ensure all windows, all doors and all garage doors are locked. Disconnect power to automatic garage doors. Proper dead bolt, hinge, lock, latch and door frame installation is important to ensure doorways and windows cannot be pried open, spread apart or screws removed to allow easier forced entry into your home. Change locks on new homes or if your key has been lost. If they want in make breaking glass the only option for a criminal. Glass can be hardened, especially in and near doors, with tempered and special break-proof laminates. Use steel solid exterior doors only. Install through-door viewers to ensure you can see who in at your door before you open it. Video surveillance cameras connected to your PC and also your PDA are now reasonably priced.

5) Install an alarm system that wails loudly when tripped. Just like the flashing alarm light in your automobile, have a similar visible indicator in your front and back windows. Make potential intruders know that you have a burglar alarm system.

6) Install bars or grill work in your basement windows (these can be opened from inside in case of fire). A window well provides a convenient place for a would-be thief to take lots of time to enter your home through the basement.

7) Don't leave your garage door opener in your car when you are at work. If a thief breaks into your automobile they know your home address from your vehicle permit. If you leave your garage door opener in the vehicle, they now also have easy access to your home, while you are at work.

8) Document your possessions. Take Photos and/or Videotape all your valuables. Every year video your entire home, belongings and property. Record serial numbers on large valuables. Store all this information off-site. You now have a record of all your property incase of theft or fire.

9) Register and mark valuables through Operation Identification (contact your local Police). Obtain an engraver from your Community Police Office or buy one. Etch or engrave your driver's license number (not SSN or SIN) on valuables. If stolen and later found, Police can check with Motor Vehicles for your name and address. Keep minimum cash and valuables in your home. Secure valuables off-site (bank safety deposit box).

10) Maintain a good neighbor community. Organize a Neighborhood Watch [http://www.neighbourhoodwatchregistry.com/]. Look out for each other. That snoopy neighbor can be a perfect burglar alarm system.

Your home and property are part of a community and neighborhood. There is always strength in numbers. Expand your home security network. Work to have your community burglar unfriendly. Clearly let the bad guys know, "Go Somewhere Else"!

Measuring an Interior Door for a Replacement

If it is time to replace one of your interior doors, it's important to measure properly so that the replacement door fits well. Although it is often possible to simply repair and re-paint an interior door, sometimes it becomes necessary to actually replace it. If a door is too severely damaged, or if it has an outdated style that no longer works with your home decor, replacing it is often the preferred option. Additionally, in some cases you might need to measure for a new door, or to change the size of an existing door. If you're ready to replace or add one or more interior doors within your home, here are some tips that can help.

interior doors prehung

Choosing the Perfect Door
Although you'll find a wide array of colors, styles and designs from which to choose, making sure to get the right size of door is actually the most important task. When a door doesn't fit correctly it will stick and jam, or it simply will not close tightly. In order to avoid this problem, it's necessary to take careful measurements. In fact, measuring more than once in order to make sure your measurements are correct can be a great safeguard against purchasing the wrong size door. It's better to spend a bit more time and effort when measuring than to waste time and money later after you've accidentally purchased an improperly sized door.

INTERIOR DOORS

Materials You Will Need
In order to perform careful measurements, you will need a few basic tools and supplies. If you are measuring to replace an existing door, you might only need a tape measure. However, if you are measuring in order to add a new door, or to change the size of an existing door, you will also need a framing square and possibly some grid paper.

Replacing an Existing Door
If you simply need to replace an existing door, your measuring tasks can be quite simple. If the door you are replacing was sized correctly, you'll simply need to measure it in order to find the correct measurements for the replacement. Always measure both the height and width of the door, measuring twice to help ensure accuracy. Write the measurements down, then purchase a door that matches the measurements. However, in some cases you might need to trim the new door a bit to make sure it fits perfectly.

Measuring for a New or Resized Door Opening
When creating a new door opening, be sure to add two inches to both the door height and width measurement. This will allow enough space for the door frame to be installed properly, plus an adequate amount of space for any necessary shims. If necessary, sketch the wall of the room onto graph paper, so that you can carefully plan the position and size of the door opening. It's also important to pay attention to which way the door will swing during this planning phase. You'll need to measure carefully, starting at the top of the door, in order to properly place the hinges. Check to make sure the corners of the door and the door frame are both square, using a framing square, before hanging.

6 panel interior doors

You can clean easily using a vacuum cleaner. Here is a guide on how to vacuum car interior:

INTERIOR DOORS

Step 1: Remove clutter in your car first. Get rid of trash in the compartments and under the seat. You should not pick up big and sharp objects using your vacuum cleaner.

Step 2: Open all doors of your car to allow air to circulate inside and remove unwanted odor. Let it stay there for at least 30 minutes.

Step 3: Get damp cloth and wipe the windshield and the headboard. Also wipe the steering wheel and the other dusty parts of the car. If there are stains in the car seat, remove the stains first using an upholstery stain remover.

Step 4: Get your shop vacuum or hand held vacuum cleaner. Cordless cleaners work better in cleaning car interior because you can move it easily. You are not hampered by the cord. Make sure you use the right attachment for the cleaner.

Step 5: Turn the machine on and vacuum the front seat. Vacuum all sides of the car seat. After finishing this, vacuum the floor close to the driver's seat and the passenger seat.

Step 6: Turn off the machine and move to the back portion of the car. Vacuum the back seat area. Remove debris and dust particles. Also vacuum the floor area. Vacuum the back portion of the driver and the passenger seat.

Step 7: Turn off the machine again and open the rear compartment if your car has one. Vacuum this area as well. Make sure you have also picked up sharp objects first before cleaning.

If your car interior smells funny, try sprinkling baking soda over the front and back seat and the floor of the car. Baking soda can diffuse unwanted odor. Close the door and windows and let the baking soda stay there for an hour. After an hour, vacuum your car using the steps above.

You can also purchase cleaning beads that can absorb stains and odor from furniture and upholstery. Sprinkle the beads on the car seat and floor and let it work for about an hour. Vacuum them after an hour.

Modern Interior Design - Bringing Homes And Offices To The 21st Century

Modern interior design is a trend followed not only in the U.S. but in almost all economically buoyant countries in the world. What used to be employed only in offices is now also being used in homes.

interior doors

Sleek, simple, impressive - these are just a few of the characteristics of modern interior design. New hotels which prefer to veer away from mediocre and traditional hotel interiors make use of modern interior design techniques that surprisingly bring in a lot of curious guests.

INTERIOR DOORS

From the lobbies to the elevators to the hotel rooms, guests are awed by the massiveness of many hotel structures and fixtures using modern interior design. Offices, too, prefer this style because it gives their corporations an image of straightforwardness, innovativeness, and reliability.

The materials used in modern interior design, such as steel, glass, and hardwood somehow give the impression that the business owners are no-nonsense. Sure, there may be a few accent pieces here and there, but generally, furniture is used sparingly.

Modern interior design concepts

An adept professional specializing in modern interior design should know how to keep the room from being too clinical or sterile. This tends to be a common mistake of people who aren't too familiar with the concepts of modern interior design.

This style's furniture are generally bland and impersonal, so many designers add a few eye-catching patterns and colors here and there. While modern interior design is normally monochromatic, splashes of other colors can be used on paintings, throw pillows, and other conversation pieces such as aquariums.

Objects in a room influenced by modern interior design tend to be kept to a minimum, but are usually oversized and create huge impacts. For instance, a long, low-back sofa may be upholstered in black leather and framed in chrome, but it can be softened by pillows with light colored covers.

Sometimes, there can be only one painting on the wall but its size is almost of mural proportions. In addition, the patterns used in the artwork are almost always very powerful and striking. Other proponents of modern interior design can also choose an imposing piece of sculpture instead of a painting, but in any case, these accent pieces are purposely meant to grab the guest's attention.

Even the flooring of a home or office using modern interior design is of neutral and earthy colors - blacks, whites, grays, silvers, and brown or green hues. There is also an extravagant use of shiny surfaces and bold, geometric shapes that give a sense of trendiness and power.

Interior Decorating For Men

It is difficult to really pin down what man decor is. Guys are a diverse bunch with a wide range of traits and attributes. Labeling an entire gender with a certain personality is a dangerous habit.

interior doors for sale

However there are certain things which in our society are stylistically male. Not a firm scientific decoration, these are more a philosophy, a set of intrinsic notions which give us a common artistic playground upon which to work. Some things just seem girly, and some things seem male. It is as obvious as the difference between pink and blue.

INTERIOR DOORS

Defining male decorating preferences is really a matter of understanding the psychology that we expect from this gender. Male décor is, by its very definition, not female décor, and therefore its essence is going to be comprised of the difference between the minds of the two.

One of the things society thinks of men, is that they are more functional than women. While females appreciate beauty, guys like things that work. In fact common conceptions state that men are actually annoyed by useless decorative touches.

This means that one of the key elements of guy decorating would be to choose function over form. A delicate coffee tables made from flowing strips of stainless steal will lose out to a sturdy work table made of oak.

Another manifestation of this trait is the male trend to decorate using their hobbies and interests. Sports accessories, toys, models, these are the favorite accessories of a manly room. Meanwhile flowers and incense stands, candles and lace, objects which create atmosphere and little else, those are generally considered more feminine in their nature.

Another aspect of male décor is that guys are generally larger than women. This means they need more room to be comfortable. They need to be able to stretch out, and feel like the world around them is proportionate to their size.

One of the most stereotypical pieces of guy décor is the recliner. Often this is the only furnishing which is big enough to fit a man's body comfortably. Able to lean back and stretch out, they can generally support the majority of a tall guy's size, in a comfortable and relaxing way.

Size and function trends collide in other aspects of guy decorating. Men tend to like big dressers, big beds, big shelves, and big drawers. This is both because the imposing size matches them, and because these objects tend to do their jobs better. Bigger containers hold more. Bigger beds comfort more. Bigger dressers are generally stronger and more durable.

Men also tend to like different colors than women. Guys tend to be drawn to darker and more earthen colors. Red, brown, black, and green are traditionally masculine, and in some shades have a distinctly male feel.

While these trends may hold true for some males, every guy is different. What is important when creating a space is that you take the desires and preferences of everyone that inhabits it, male and female, and find out where your tastes overlap. Compromise in decorating is the art of creating a symphony from many different visions.

Famous Interior Designers and Their Styles in Interior Design - Part 1

Introduction

louvered interior doors

This series of 4 articles takes a brief but informative look at 21 of the most famous and Interior Designers, from the earliest pioneers right through to the most celebrated modern day designers.

INTERIOR DOORS

The Pioneers of Interior Design

Jean-Henri Jansen (1854-1928)

Dutch designer, Jean-Henri Jansen, launched one of the first ever international interior design companies 'Maison Jansen' (House of Jansen) in 1880, which became renowned for designing and creating exceptionally beautiful and high quality furniture which would be utilized in a multitude of interior decoration projects. House of Jansen opened branches in 8 of the major cities of the world. Jansen worked closely with the talented interior designer Stephane Boudin whom he made director of the company. The clients of House of Jansen included Royalty and the rich and famous.

Elsie de Wolfe (1865-1950)

The first lady of interior decoration, Elsie de Wolfe considered herself an 'ugly child'. This Victorian stage actress was a rebel of her times and was credited by many to be the inventor of the modern profession of interior design, even though there were already established interior designers in her time. Elsie disliked Victorian tastes altogether, her designs were therefore generally made up of light and bright colors, contrary to the drab and gloomy Victorian décor coupled with unnecessary excesses such as heavy velvet draperies. This was a pioneering departure from the contemporary designs of the time. Elsie's influence continues to be felt in the modern world of interior design.

Ogden Codman (1863-1951)

American interior decorator and architect, Ogden Codman spent his childhood in his birthplace of Boston before heading to France in his youth for a period of time. Codman had two uncles who influenced him tremendously - architect John Hubbard and decorator Richard Ogden. Some of Ogden Codman's works include Edith Wharton's Newport home, Land's End, the Rockefeller family estate of New York client John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and the Newport summer home of Cornelius Vanderbilt II. Along with novelist Edith Wharton, Codman co-authored a guidepost of American interior design, 'The Decoration of Houses' in 1897.

Frances Elkins (1888-1953)

Born in Milwaukee, Frances Adler Elkins was one of the most prominent interior decorator and designer of the previous century. Sister of the famed Chicago architect David Adler, Elkins was known for her futuristic designs that brought together different styles and elements from various periods. They included country French styles, chinoiserie and art deco. The furnishings featured in her designs included designers such as Jean-Michel Frank and Alberto Giacometti. The career of Elkins that spanned over three decades is glittered with many high profile commissions in Hawaii, the Midwest and northern and southern California, none more interesting than the restoration of the 1830s structure, Casa Amesti in Monterrey, California.

Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959)

Frank Lloyd Wright was an interior designer and architect whose career included more than 1000 projects, 500 of them that have been complete. Wright was known for his promotion of organic architecture, an example of which is Fallingwater. The Robie House is an example of Wright's leadership of the Prairie School architectural movement, while the Rosenbaum House depicts Wright's Usonian home concept. Wright also had refreshing ideas for every kind of building, be it church, office, school, hotel or museum. Along with excellent architectural renderings, Wright also designed much of the interiors of his buildings including the Décor, layout and furniture.

Famous Interior Designers and Their Styles in Interior Design - Part 1

In Part 2 of this article - which can be accessed through the 'Article Source' link below - we take a look at the early interior designers including Fritz August Breuhaus, Stephan Bouldin, Emilio Terry and Dorothy Draper.

One of the cornerstones of many great interior designs is the choice of art. Paintings in particular are often sourced by modern designers to complement the rest of the the design scheme. The popularity of art has increased considerably in the UK over the last decade, not only the number art enthusiasts increased but also the number of artists at all levels; from hobbyists right through to professionals. For those artists, ABC Art supplies provide Blank Canvas and Canvas Boards which are durable, long lasting and suitable to be used for art produced for use as part of an interior design scheme.

Home Interior Design Tips For Cloakrooms

Often regarded as a dull little room, a cloakroom should instead be a room to treasure. Sadly neglected by many home owners, cloakrooms all too frequently become a dumping ground for broken bicycles, discarded footwear and malfunctioning deck chairs. If treated with a little (but not too much) respect, your cloakroom will serve as a useful convenience for your guests while allowing you privacy in your own bathroom (where your wrinkle cream, old school face cloth and worn-out toothbrushes remain for ever a secret!).

interior doors

Requiring minimal space (an area as small as lxl.5m will accommodate the essentials), a cloakroom can be sited practically anywhere so long as suitable provisions can be made for the plumbing and, if it adjoins a living room or kitchen, there is a lobby between the two. A space on the floor below an existing bathroom will in many cases minimize disruption.

INTERIOR DOORS

What does the good cloakroom contain? Essential, of course, are the WC pan and cistern. From a decorative point of view, a built-in cistern is neater and also provides a shelf on which accessories can be displayed. Should your cistern not be built in, you can still install a removable shelf supported on brackets over it. If space is limited, you will need to fit either an extra-small hand basin or one that will fit across a corner position.

In a larger cloakroom it is a good idea to select a more generous basin with a swing mixer-tap arrangement - so useful for filling a bucket, watering can or kettle. The basin can also be set into a vanity unit to give it a less utilitarian appearance and to secure extra storage below. If space allows, the inclusion of a shower unit may help to relieve pressure on a main bathroom.

In addition to these basics you will need a well-lit mirror (preferably full-length), toilet paper holder, towel rail and wall hooks for coats. Heating a room that is used for such short periods may seem wasteful, but is essential for the comfort of those visiting the room and can easily be combined with a heated towel rail. Grooming aids such as a nail brush, perfumes, hair brush and comb set, paper tissues and a clothes brush are thoughtful additions, as are magazines for the amusement of visitors.

Because your cloakroom is likely to occupy only a small area, you have a wonderful opportunity to consider more exotic finishes that might be thought of as extravagant or overpowering in a larger space. And, as the time spent in this room is likely to be brief, you can afford to make a much stronger decorating statement than might be considered prudent in, say, a family bathroom.

It's the optimum room for cracking a visual joke to a captive audience - where else can you display your achievements (your 'Oscar', degree, war medals, parachute jump certificate or peace prize) without seeming immodest? Give some thought to the following ideas:

If there are many pipes exposed, how about making a feature out of them by painting them rainbow colors? What about covering your walls with sheets of newspaper containing amusing headlines? If your cloakroom has a dull view from the window (or indeed no window at all), why not use the opportunity to create you own scenes with a touch of trompe I'oeil7 Consider leaving the walls fairly plain and using your cloakroom as a trophy room, museum or art gallery.

Whatever your style selection, be careful not to combine too many ideas in this small space or the room will lose impact.

Interior Sliding Doors

Time never stands still and the invention of interior sliding doors gives a new dimension on the interior of many houses. Today many people want more comfort and luxury, their homes have to look totally perfect. Consumers are very demanding nowadays and the producers have to jump on every question to be able to deliver exactly that kind of product the consumers want to buy. The competition between the producers is killing and everybody has to stay very alert. Of course for the consumer this is a great benefit because they can profit of this competition.

interior doors with frosted glass

Because of the space and also the looks of the normal doors the idea of a complete different version of doors came up in the minds of some producers. The development and of course the selling of sliding doors started and the numbers of sales increased incredibly. Because of this the producers meant there could be a much bigger market for this kind of application. So the step to the development of interior sliding doors was not that big to make. And again the consumers were pleased by the idea even create more space as before.

INTERIOR DOORS

You could thing of the many different applications for interior sliding doors. For example you could use it for each closet there is in a house. You even could find an application in the attic where you always have to look at the often unused space of the slanting roof. When you would use this normally lost space and finish it with these sliding doors you even create room to store all the things that normally lies around and make such messy impression of your house.

The same as for the usual doors there are for this sliding door many versions and materials you can make your choice between. These sliding doors can be made of materials such as wood, plastic, metal but the latest development is of these doors made of glass. For each purse there will be another kind to make your choice between there are cheap versions as well as very expansive ones. Changing Interior Doors and Sliders

In most houses, interior doors are hollow-core, meaning that they consist of a wood frame with flat veneer glued on the front and back. As a result they are lightweight and, quite frankly, flimsy. Typically the veneer surface has been either stained (if it's neutral wood) or painted.

interior doors

You can easily switch to solid-core wooden interior doors, which come in a wide variety of styles and are readily available in standard indoor sizes. You can purchase an excellent interior wood door, unpainted and unstained, for around 0. (By contrast, a hollow-core door costs as little as .)

INTERIOR DOORS

Unless you are experienced, you are best off getting a prehung interior door, with hinges already attached to the jamb. Again, remove the existing door (by punching out the hinge pins) and then use a crowbar to remove the jamb and surrounding molding, being careful not to damage the wall on either side.

Once the old door is out, you fit the new one into the jamb and, using wood shims (available where the door is sold), set it in place and then nail the jamb in. Finally, put on new molding (unless you were careful enough to save the old).

Don't overspend on interior doors. While replacing them will add to the value of the home, it won't add much. More than anything else, the new doors simply lend an indefinable (but real) elegance to the interior.

The entire replacement process shouldn't take more than a few hours; once you get good at it, you'll need much less time than that.

Changing Sliders

Many homes come with sliding glass doors leading out to the patio or backyard. After a time, the metal wheels on the sliding door wear out and it becomes hard to move. Further, the metal itself can date a house. The usual course of action, therefore, is to replace the doors.

You can replace sliders with wooden, metal, or vinyl doors. A recent trend is to install French doors, the kind with lots of small windows.

A standard replacement slider for a 5-foot door can cost 0 or 0. Change that to plastic and the price goes up 0. Move on to wood-particularly a door with true French windows-and you could easily pay 00 or more, depending on the design.

Dont' use wood exterior sliders. Moisture will damage the wood and virtually every year you'll need to spend hours repainting or restaining.

The usual removal procedure is to lift out the slider. Yes, the door is heavy, so get help. Just slide it all the way open and then lift it off its track. To lift off the static portion of the slider, simply remove the two or three metal screws that are holding it in place. Then lift off the metal jamb by unscrewing it from the studs on the sides and the header above.

Remember that changing the slider means replacing an exterior door. Usually removal of the old door will involve some damage to the exterior facing and the interior drywall. If you're careful, however, you can limit the damage to less than an inch around the opening.

If you are installing another slider, you simply reverse the process. Afterward, you will probably need to do some repair work both inside and out. If you are replacing the slider with a wooden door, follow the procedures described above. The trim or molding that comes with the new door will often cover all or most of the damage done when removing the original slider.

Some vinyl sliders come with overlapping strips on the exterior. If you're careful, they can cover the outer wall damage incurred when removing the old slider.

Virtual Interior Decorating

Designing your humble abode can be very hard. Most of the time, you would need to hire interior decorators who present you with designs on what they could do for your homes. But these may take lots of time and money. Through the improvements in technology, you can find a quicker and easier way to design the layout of your home. Decorating your home can now be done simply with the touch of a button through virtual interior decorating.

What is virtual interior decorating?

INTERIOR DOORS

Virtual interior decorating allows people to design the layout of their own homes without spending too much money on professional decorators. In fact, you may no longer need to hire one, for you can already design your apartment or home by yourself, simply by purchasing interior decorating software. Not only does it save you money, since you will be in charge of your plans, you also do not need to hire the services of an interior decorator for this phase of work.

This software is also very helpful for professional interior decorators because their ideas will be visualized easier by their clients. Through the magic of virtual reality, you can now have a sense of what your future home will look like before the designer begins the actual construction work.

Aside from generating you room or home in a virtual environment, you can also send pictures of the room you wish to change to professional interior decorators and they will then super-impose or create digital sketches of their ideas on them. This may give a clearer picture of what you can expect from your room or house instead of relying on simple descriptions or plain sketches.

By using virtual reality as a helpful tool for interior decorating, you can now easily and conveniently design the house of your dreams at a very affordable price.
