Wooden Kitchen Cabinet Doors

There is an array of assortments when it comes to kitchen cabinet doors. You can pick one that complements your style or the season from doors made from stainless steel, Rigid Thermo Foil (RTF), normal steel, wood and aluminum. However, in the cabinet industry the wood material is the most highly rated preference for a majority of styles for kitchen cabinets, either the modern or contemporary designs.

Basically there are two kinds of wooden cabinet doors, the finished and unfinished types. The unfinished cabinet doors consist of the medium density fiber (MDF) boards. Comparatively, they are way less hefty and can match your kitchen cabinets of any colors. Besides, they are easily available in any home kitchen improvement stores. The finished doors are often completely done, readily available to be fixed onto your cabinets. The styles range from single arch, double arch, square, solid panel or recessed panel doors, depending on your desired style and financial budget. Furthermore, the finished wood doors can either have their colors remained natural or have it dyed or stained into a different color.

Speaking about the colors of kitchen cabinet doors, there are few vital tools to practice before selecting the right color. Always remember to pick lighter color tone for your cabinet doors as the finishing process will cause the color tone to go darker than the original shade. To complement the space area of your kitchen, small kitchen should go well with lighter colors as it can make your kitchen look more spacious. The selection of colors could be between pale yellow to pale tan. Examples include maple, ash, birch, oak or pine colors.

Should you apply the contemporary or antique style in your kitchen then your wooden doors can be painted using medium wood colors featuring some pinkish cast, light brown or a tan shade. Cherry and beech should be excellent to create the corresponding color tone. If you prefer darker colors then you can opt for the dark wood color selections such as the mahogany, butternut, rosewood or walnut.

Most kitchen cabinet doors are custom made as the size may differ from one kitchen to another. Generally cabinets made from maple, walnut, oak and cherry are among the finest quality of wood materials.

Benefits of Glass Kitchen Cabinet Doors

Glass kitchen cabinet doors are an elegant way to improve your kitchen. They are both beautiful and functional, which will improve how you use your kitchen and its value when you want to sell your home. In this post I want to share some tips for what to look for in your glass cabinet doors so you can make a great decision when you purchase them.

The biggest factor in the quality of a glass kitchen cabinet door is the frame that it sits in. Most of the time this will be crafted from wood, but metal and plastic are also common materials. Whatever the material, you need something that is high quality so it stays flush with the cabinet for its entire life. Cheap wood will warp over time, which will put extra strain on the glass that could cause it to break when the door closes.

There aren't many differences in glass. Your decision here should be based completely on what catches your eye and works with the rest of your kitchen. Etched glass is very popular with kitchen cabinet doors, but the more decoration you put on the glass, the less you can see through it. One of the most important benefits of glass doors is the fact that you can see through them, which prevents wasting time searching around, so you have to find a balance between function and fashion.

Upgrading only the doors, and not the cabinets, is the most cost effective way to make this upgrade. The cabinets, and their installation, is the beef of the costs. If you can get away with only changing the doors, you are going to save a lot of cash! Most of the time, you can install the doors on your own. It's very easy to get cabinet doors hung level, and can probably be done in an afternoon.

Choosing glass kitchen cabinet doors is a great addition to any home. They are versatile, allowing you to see right into the cabinet, while looking fantastic. There aren't a lot of things that you can do to your kitchen that will have the same impact at such a low price, assuming that you're not upgrading the cabinets as well!

Getting the Best Kitchen Cabinet Designs

How do all those people get such nice kitchen designs, when my kitchen is so awful? Sound familiar? There are a lot of bad kitchens out there and you might live with one of them. You don't have to put up with a kitchen you hate. You can change it in small ways and in major ways. If you start with a good kitchen cabinet design, the rest of the kitchen will fall into place. Sometimes a new coat of paint will do wonders and cost little. Other times the only way to get a decent, working kitchen is to gut the space and start over.

The first step to a new kitchen that really works for you is to make a list of what is not working in the existing kitchen. List all the elements that are worn out and need replacing. List appliances and counters that are in inconvenient places. If the kitchen area is too small, look for areas that it can expand to. Maybe it is next to a formal dining room you never use, or a living room that is too large and can give some space to the kitchen and still serve it's function well. The wall between the kitchen and living room can be replaced with an open counter space. For structural changes like this, you will need a professional contractor.

After you have made your lists and measured the kitchen to make a drawing called a floor plan, you are ready to start redesigning your kitchen, including kitchen cabinet designs. If you can afford it, hire a professional kitchen remodeling firm to make your ideas into the best kitchen cabinet design possible. If your budget won't go that far, try visiting your local home center like Lowes or Home Depot. They often have kitchen designers on staff to give you design help if you buy your cabinets with them. These stores will have everything you need for a kitchen remodel including installers to put it all together.

If your budget is smaller yet and you have to do most of the work yourself, there is still hope. Get kitchen design books and magazines to guide your design efforts. Do as much of the work as you are able to do well, then hire professionals to do what you can't. Sometimes you can hire a professional who will let you work with him to save money. You may be able to use your old cabinets if you paint them or have them refaced. You can always get a good plan from a kitchen designer and do it in stages as your budget allows.

Cheap Cabinet Renovation Ideas for Budget Remodeling

There are several ways to upgrade your kitchen on a limited budget. These cheap kitchen cabinet remodeling ideas are easy to do yourself (DYI). Renovations can be done at a very low cost, but will require an investment of your time.

Painting Cabinets
This is by far the best way to make an old set of kitchen cupboards look new. There are several paints on the market designed specifically for cupboards. Cabinet Rescues is one such paint. The process generally involves cleaning the cupboards, lightly sanding them and then painting. You can plan on setting aside three days to complete the process.

There are also countertop coatings that can be purchased in kits. Many of these products are designed to transform an old worn-out counter into a stunning granite look. Giani is where you can get these kits. They are available in many different colors and patterns. The process of transforming an old counter takes about four days.

Replacing or Adding New Hardware
New handles or knobs can be purchased at reasonable prices. I'd suggest starting your search at a local cabinet shop. Oftentimes you can get them for just a little over the wholesale price from a local fabricator. If you go to a place like Home Depot or Lowes, the new hardware is going to be rather expensive.

Once you find the right handle or knob, you will need to make sure you have the correct length screws. It is also a good idea to see if you need standard thread or metric thread screws. Some of the supply companies include various lengths in the packages that the hardware comes in.

Replacing Cupboard Fronts
The final way to do a reasonably priced upgrade will be through replacing the doors. This may cost more than you are intending to spend. The other suggestions I made could be done for less than three hundred dollars. Switching out your cabinet doors could cost a thousand dollars or more. This would still be a cheap cabinet renovation in comparison to gutting the kitchen and installing all new cabinets and countertops.

Miscellaneous Cabinet Renovation Ideas
Much of what you do to renovate your kitchen cabinets or counters depends on your budget. You can add roll-out drawers or make existing cabinet doors into glass doors. You can add wine racks, spice racks, cutlery inserts and pull-out trash cans. There are many small things that can be done cheaply to upgrade your cupboards.

If you have laminate counters, you could have them recovered with new mica. This is about one third less expensive than replacing them altogether with new laminate tops.

Another popular way of upgrading your cupboards is by stencil painting the cupboard doors. There is a really good video on YouTube by Megan Carter that gives all the details you need to accomplish this task.

One thing you should keep in mind when you are thinking about how to do your cheap cabinet renovations is that old is old. An older set of cupboards will still have somewhat of an old appearance even after you give them a face-lift. Your renovations will make them look better, but they will not look new. It's difficult to take anything and redeem it to a like-new condition.
