Great job on cleaning the exterior of your home! There are just a couple more steps to accomplish before we attack the task of actually painting the exterior of your house. The first task to complete is to make a list of all of the materials that you will need to purchase prior to painting your home. I will supply you with a fairly accurate list of what you will need, but remember that it all depends on the size of your house.

In terms of efficiency, it may be better to pick up all the materials that you will need after dropping off the pressure washer... may save you a little time and gas. You can either go to Lowes or Home Depot for these standard painting supplies. So here is a common list of materials that you will need to paint your home:

Caulking gun - Cheaper the better 4 Tubes of 30 year DAP White Caulk (You may need more or less depending on how many cracks you saw while pressure washing. 2 Rolls blue tape: This tape is best used for taping on windows. These are the basic materials that you will need to purchase in order to paint the exterior of your home. Keep in mind that you will also need a 6' step ladder (Perfect for all those locations on the first level of your home, 20' Extension ladder (for the peaks on a ranch style home), a 28' extension ladder ( for a two story home), and a 40' Extension Ladder for a three story house. My recommendation for ladders is to just purchase a 6' ladder; it seems that you will always have a need for one throughout life. If you are painting a two story house I would rent a 20' ladder for two days for all the lower locations (because it is really, really easy to move around compared to a 28' ladder) and then rent the 28' ladder for one day just to paint the peaks. The same goes for a three story house... except substitute the 28' ladder for a 40' ladder. Tip: make sure you ask the place you are renting from if the ladders have levelers on the feet. This is imperative because the ground you will be placing the ladder will almost never be a flat spot. You will also need to rent an airless paint sprayer for one day or two; depending on the size of the home and a couple other things.

So there is your painting list for your little project. Not sounding so little any more is it? Well, don't worry... It does take a little time, but in the end it will be well worth it.

How long does it take to paint the exterior of a house? Well, with all the materials purchased / rented, it should take one person five days from start to finish (8 hour days). Obviously the more people that you have the faster it goes!

Now that you have all of the materials for the job, the next thing to do is to go around and re-caulk your entire house. Check the trim around the windows, doors, and especially the trim pieces at each corners of your home (These seem to get the most abuse). If you haven't applied caulk before on a house, pump the caulk out of the gun with a thickness of about the size of a pencil around the needed areas. It is a good idea to caulk one small section and then rub your finger along the freshly applied caulk, pressing it into the seam. This will help the caulk to attach to both sections and create a smooth seam between the trim and siding. Tip: pay special attention to the locations next to down spouts from your gutters. This has a tendency to have the most moisture and damage... So it will need the most TLC. One common problem that I run into with the trim that hangs just below the down spouts is that it is completely rotted away. In this case, I will replace this section of trim to keep from further corrosion of anything else.

Once you have re-caulked your entire home, the next step is to scrape off old paint that is peeling away. You can do so with a paint scraper and go over it with the sanding block. It's imperative to have everything end up smooth and consistent so you don't end up with your house looking choppy. Remember, if you scrape off old paint and can see the bare wood, you will need to apply primer to those areas before new paint can be applied.

The next step is to start masking off everything that you don't want painted; starting with the windows. Take your blue tape, plastic and masking dispenser and cover your windows so that when you spray your home, the overspray doesn't get on the windows. When masking everything else, I would recommend using the regular masking tape. Remember, the more time you spend covering everything up, the easier it will be later.

At a gallon or more for quality exterior latex, you can't afford to make a mistake. And if you don't like the colors, your neighbors probably won't either; colors have public impact - you're not the only one who has to live with them. But a little research and planning can help you get started with the confidence that the final paint job is one that you - and your neighbors - will be pleased with.

Field, Trim, and Accent

An existing house isn't a blank canvas - after all, you're not changing the color of the roof, the brick or stone, and maybe not even the windows (if they're vinyl or aluminum clad). Roofs and masonry walls are large areas of unbroken color and natural starting points for creating a palette.

An exterior paint scheme should be made up of at least three colors: the field - large areas such as walls or roofs; the trim - corner boards, window trim, fascias, rakes, etc.; and accent - specific elements including doors, shutters, and other architectural features.

Field colors make up the majority of what you'll see on the house and will lead you to the choice of trim and accent. Are you trying to make your house look a little more prominent on the street? A lighter field color will make it look larger; a darker color will visually shrink it. "Unattractive" elements - gutters, downspouts, etc., should also be painted the field color to help them "disappear" into the background.

But it's the trim color that can make or break the scheme. Painting the trim the same color as the field can work in some cases, but it can also give the house an "unfinished" or "wedding cake" look. Darker trim - especially around the windows - can cause a "frame" effect, where the windows look like pictures hung on a wall. Keeping the trim lighter than the field is almost always a safe bet.

The accent color is where the excitement is. Once you've chosen an attractive combination of field and trim, make it "pop" with an eye-catching accent color. It's a tool to give life to an otherwise muted color scheme and draws attention to the important features of the house. The front door, shutters, and the windows frames (not the trim) are good places for accent colors. Windows painted with accent and trim colors together can be the most interesting part of the composition.

Choosing a Paint Scheme

The two most important considerations in choosing a color scheme are the architecture of the house and the neighborhood context.

Historic architectural styles, for example, look best in their original color schemes, although these can vary quite a bit. Original Colonial and Colonial Revival homes were often quite colorful on the inside, but less so on the exterior. Often they were painted in a single color for the field and trim, with a second color for an accent. Combined with prominent red brick chimneys and a brick or stone base, the effect is a three-color scheme.

Victorian homes - often referred to as "painted ladies" - sometimes showed off six or more colors of trim and accent. Making that look good today takes the services of a color specialist and a lot of time. But a similar effect can be had with as little as three colors if they're well placed on the house.

The Craftsman style of the early 20th Century sported a darker, earthier color scheme using deep browns, greens, and reds. The current popularity of the style is making more homeowners consider richer color schemes for their homes.

Take cues from the other houses in your area - a house should have its own personality and style, but houses don't look good in "party dress" all the time.

Whether you're comfortable with choosing colors or not, you have several resources that can make the decision much easier. Many paint manufacturers have produced pre-selected color palettes arranged by architectural style or color range that specify compatible field, trim, and accent colors. They're available at paint and building supply stores and most are very well done.

First, choose the type of door that will be put up. There are three basic groups to choose from. There are entry doors, interior doors and combination storm/screen doors. By following five steps entry doors can be replaced with ease. Once you have this skill under your belt you will be able to put up interior doors with no problem.

When putting up any door the general premise is the same. The only real difference is whether or not it is an exterior or interior door. You begin by taking off the old door. Tuck a wedge under the outside corner and release the hinges. Once the door is off there are two options available. The first one is to hang the door from loose-pin hinges. Part of the hinge is hooked into the door and the other half is hooked into the doorframe. If you are working in an old house, the hinge might not be so cooperative due to years of paint build up. When this happens you should unscrew the hinges and take off the doorframe to get the door off.

Next you will take the hinge leaves off of the door. You can hang new ones or use the old ones. Buff the old ones with a sander and use a clear protective coating to cover it. New hinges should be the exact same size as the previous ones.

Shape the hinges they way that you would like and put the new hinge leave on the frame of the door. The screws must be long enough to go trough the stud-wall framing and the frame of the door.

After that you will need to trim the door. Take notes from the previous door if needed. If the new door is in line with the old one than trimming may not be necessary. However, if the old door is not a good example, measure the door opening and leave a 1/8 bottom clearance and 1/16 at the side and top. If there is carpet to take into account you need to have a bottom clearance that is 3/4 more than that. A fine tooth saw will be needed for the trimming.

Get the door ready for the hinges. New mortises need to be made. There will be routed or craved out depressions in which the hinges blades will be placed. This will keep the surface level. The old door can be a pattern to follow for this or you can use the new door. Put in the doorway and wedge it 1/8 away from the bottom. Put the hinge locations on the door.

After that put the door on the latch edge and take a pencil or knife and trace the line to the door edge from every hinge. The new hinge on
of the door should be outlined with the hinge leaf template.

Use a wood chisel to leave marks on the hinge mortises. Level the cutes with the thickness of the leaf hinge. Three hinges is the usual standard for six foot tall doors.

Next you need apply some wood sealant to the door and put wood screws in the hinge leaves. Next hang the door.
