Removing an Interior Door

Removing the trim with a hammer and pry bar is your first step. Tap the pry bar between the inner edge of the trim and the door frame. This will loosen the trim from the frame. If you use the pry bar on the outer edge of the trim, use a small block of wood to place against the wall to keep from damaging the drywall. If you will be reusing the trim be careful not to damage the edges or split the trim. Complete this process on both sides of the door.

Once the trim is removed, remove the center screw from the top hinge. This could be a long screw into the wall studs. Next, remove the door from the frame. Do this by inserting a nail under the bottom hinge and tapping up with your hammer. This will cause the hinge pin to raise up. It can then be easily removed. Repeat this on all the hinge pins. It's best to have the door closed when doing this as it will keep the door in place until you are ready to pull it off the hinges. Grab the knob and hinge side of the door and gently pull it off the hinges.

Using a reciprocating saw, insert the blade between the door frame and wall. Cut off any nails through the jamb and into the wall studs. Do this around both sides and the top of the door. Your door frame can now be simply removed from the opening.

Always be careful when removing and handling a door they can be very heavy. You may want a second person to lend a hand.
