Etched Glass Doors For Interior Beauty

Are you looking for wonderful glass doors for your home or office? In the past, it's always been sturdy, heavy wooden doors that have gotten all the attention; the heavier and more elaborate the wood, the fancier your house was considered to be.

interior doors with glass

But that has changed as the modern day has dawned, and simplicity and elegance were valued over old-fashioned fanciness. Now, glass doors are more popular than ever, because of their contemporary sophistication and their ability to allow light in everywhere to give a much more open, warmer feel to the atmosphere of a room, house, store, or office.

INTERIOR DOORS

One type of glass door in particular is the etched glass door, and these etched glass doors are essentially designs created by frosting glass. Frosted glass results in a translucent glass window, which is nice because it allows more privacy without blocking the light.

Translucent frosted glass can be used for showers and office doors-or, if you want to be a bit fancier, you can put designs on the frosted glass and make it into a glass etching, which is truly beautiful and complex.

Glass etchings are usually created by sandblasting glass in several different stages in order to create different depths of translucency if you want a more three dimensional picture (it's somewhat like shading in a drawing, and the results are very beautiful).

Popularly, etched glass is usually made up of a semi-translucent picture with a clear background. This gives the glass a nice, elegant look while still maintaining transparency and allowing plenty of light through.

The alternative is to use an etched piece of glass with a frosted background, though It's recommended if your frosted background is significantly lighter than the actual etching to make the contrast more apparent.

If you have a garden, then consider using etched glass doors as the door to your garden; it will lend both an old-fashioned and modernistic style to your beautiful garden.

The actual process of etching glass is a little more complicated. There are several modern ways of frosting the glass in that way; there's sandblasting, which is slightly less accurate, and also etching via the Leptat acid process.

The sandblasted frosted glass gives a more abrasive look, while the Leptat acid process creates a crystalline surface with much texture that is deeply etched. The Leptat acid process originated in a Czechoslovakian glass exhibit that was at the World's Fair in Osaka, Japan.

The Leptat etching process is often considered the more expensive and more elegant of the two, because instead of simply creating a rough sheen over the glass, the Leptat acid process creates a beautiful reflective surface that is etched and carved as if it were an intricate gem, and light reflects off the Leptat etched glass from many different angles.

If you'd like, you can create your own glass etching designs using etching cream, though these may not be as beautiful as etchings through the Leptat etching process. However, homemade glass etching can be fun and is safe as long as you take precautions not to allow the glass to cut your hands.

Installing Glass Block - Tricks of the Tradesman

You can install glass block!

lowes interior shutters

It's not the easiest do it yourself project out there, but it will be perhaps the most rewarding, because it can be challenging and it will impress everyone--especially you! I have discovered the following tricks over the last eight years while building a successful glass block installation company in Palm Coast, Florida. You will not find them on any installation guide out there, because installers don't write the guides!

LOWES INTERIOR

Start with the fun stuff--design the window. There are only a few manufacturers of glass block--Pittsburgh Corning (distributed by Home Depot and Lowe's, to name a few), Weck, and Mulia. Personally I prefer Mulia--the price point is usually lower, the block meets the same design standards (all 4 inch deep block meets the Florida hurricane codes--the toughest standards in the country), and Mulia paints the interior edge of the block, which makes a nicer detail when the window is finished. All three make similar sizes and patterns. Design with the opening in mind--Pittsburgh Corning has a great guide on their website for planning out the project. Whichever block you choose, you can use this site for a planning tool. Just be sure and plan for a masonry installation--it is the most cost effective, easiest to finish, and best looking. Follow that guide for a materials list: glass block, spacers, glass block mortar, panel anchors, reinforcing, and expansion joint. Don't use channels; they complicate the project with no added benefit and less visual appeal.

Tip #1--The rough opening size

You want the rough opening to be one inch over the nominal dimension of the window. Simply put, if you want a window six blocks wide by six blocks high, using eight inch block (the standard size) your nominal dimension will be 6 block x 8 inches = 48 inches + 1 inch = 49 inches. Now that you know the standard, know the tolerance. The actual size of the glass block window will only be 47 3/4 inches x 47 3/4 inches. That 49 inch opening you are shooting for can vary up to an inch, and you can still make the window fit. So don't split hairs.

Tip #2--The bed joint

The bed joint is the foundation--it is a layer of mortar set on the window sill. If you have a true one inch over the nominal size, split it and make a half inch bed joint. You can guesstimate this, just check the opening after the bed joint is down to insure that you have enough room for the glass block. The secret to a window that lays itself is the bed joint. Put down the mortar (made the consistency of home made mashed potatoes), then dust it liberally with dry mortar. This will allow you to level this bed without the level sticking to it. If you start with a firm, level bed, you will seldom have to make any adjustments as you go up. Using your level, create a flat bed roughly 4 inches deep, to accommodate the depth of the block. Taking your time at this step will save you time and aggravation the rest of the project!

Tip #3--The butter!

Spreading mortar on the edge of the glass block is affectionately known as "buttering the block". Butter the first row as follows: The left side and right side of the block, butter to fill the void to about 1/4" beyond the lip. This leaves enough mortar to adhere to the next block. Most importantly, butter the bottom of the block flush to the outside lips. It is very important that this mortar remains flat, as this will bond to the bed joint and insures that the first course is as level as the bed joint. If your butter is lumpy on the bottom, you will have to work harder to level this course. Work smarter, not harder! This is the only course that will require butter on the bottom of the block. Throughout the rest of the window you will only butter the sides, except for the last course, which will be buttered on top as well.

Tip # 4--The level that acts like a straight edge

While a four foot level is used to keep the block level, keep a six foot level on hand to keep the block flush to the outside of the opening. This eliminates the need to worry about whether or not the glass block is tipping in or out. Simply hold the long level so it bridges the opening, then tap the glass block to the level. Do this at the top and the bottom of the glass block, to make sure that you are plumb with the wall.

Tip #5--A good grout job can make a good window look great!

Conversely, a sloppy grout job can ruin a great window. Once you have snapped off all of the spacers, take a minute and sponge down the whole window. Doing a preliminary cleaning at this stage makes your final cleanup much easier. Scrub any tough spots, paying close attention to the corners of the block, where mortar likes to build up. Using a textured grout float, spread the mortar just like tile grout, filling all joints flush to the block. The wipe down is the key to grouting. Start by wiping down the whole window, focusing on smoothing and flattening the joints. Next wipe three blocks at a time--any more will just streak the mortar. Wipe three, flip the sponge, wipe three, rinse the sponge. Think of the sponge like toilet paper, and never wipe twice with one side! If you have some streaks left, don't worry about them, they will dust off with a towel after the grout has dried.

Tip #6--Kudos

Invite your friends and/or family over to show them how handy you are. You just became the expert!

Bonus tip--Protect your hands!

Mortar in general and glass block mortar in particular is very hard on your skin. There are many gloves on the market, but my favorite are disposable powdered latex medical gloves, found at any drugstore in boxes of 50. Change them occasionally, as they will get small holes in them, but they protect your skin while allowing you to feel what you are doing.

Installing Molding For Interior Doors

When installing door trim, some carpenters begin with the legs(vertical pieces); Others prefer to hang the top trim first. Installing the top first has the advantage of offering precise control over the most finicky part of the installation, the miters. Once the top trim is up, install the legs one at a time, positioning each so that the miter is perfect. If you install the legs first, you'll have to fit the top trim on both miters simultaneously. Unless both miters are perfect and the legs perfectly parallel, you are bound to get gaps you can't close in your work.

louvered interior doors

Lay out out the reveal., The door trim is never flush with the edge of the jamb; typically it sits back from the edge by about 1/8th inch. The space, or reveal, leaves enough room for the hinge barrel and provides a margin of error if the jamb dips.

INTERIOR DOORS

The frame on the prehung door is likely to have a layout line on it that marks the edge of the reveal. If you work on an unmarked door frame, set a combination square to 1/8 inch, and guide it and a pencil along the frame. Mark the reveal on both sides and above the door.

Measure and miter the top trim. First cut a 45-degree miter on one end of the top trim piece; hold it in place to mark the inside point of the second miter cut. Lay out the cut with a combination square, and cut it with a miter box.

Nail the top trim in place. To help position the trim, miter two scrap pieces of molding, and clamp them in place along the sides of the door frame. Cut and place the top trim and adjust as necessary to get a tight miter. Nail the top trim into the jamb. Leave at least 1/8 inch of the nails exposed in case you need to adjust the piece later. Use #6 finishing nails for the jabs and #8 finishing nails through the trim and into the studs.

Miter the legs. Mitering a piece to fit can be tricky. Make it easy on yourself by mitering the legs before you square them off. Then place the legs against the frame so they are upside down. This leaves the miter on the floor and the fulll length of the trim extending toward the ceiling. Mark where the tiop trim touches the leg and cut the leg quare at the mark.

Nail the legs to the door frame. Start at the top, holding the leg so the miter closes tightly, and drive a #6 finishing nail through it and into the jamb. Work down the leg, flexing it if necessary so that it aligns with the line that marks the framing behind the wall. Repeat on the opposite leg, and then set all the nails. To keep the corners tight, predrill and drive a #6 finishing nail at an angle up through the edge of the leg, through the miter, and into the header molding.

Master Bedroom Paint Colors - Creating the Right Mood to Match Your Decor

In home decorating, color is one of the most important tools you have to create atmosphere. Ideally, you will need to match color schemes to the style of home furnishings and even the architecture of the house. This is because mood is not determined by color alone but is created in the meeting of different design elements.

lowes interior doors

For example, the minimalist look characteristically brings together modernist architecture, clean lines, pure forms, natural materials and neutral tones, resulting in an airy, uncluttered feel. In contrast, the mood of the Tuscan look depends on warm, earthy colors. Other decorative styles are also associated with particular color palettes. A color style mismatch will prevent you achieving your overall goal.

LOWES INTERIOR DOORS

Because color and décor styles require this co-ordination, the furniture, fittings and style of master bedrooms may invite particular color schemes. Rules are made to be broken but simply imposing color schemes on pre-furnished rooms may not create the desired atmosphere. Use a color wheel to create your own color scheme.

Which Mood?

If you are intent on creating a certain mood, first ask yourself if the room and the furnishings will support it. If not, you may need to refurbish. If your furniture is stylistically reasonably neutral, you will be able to utilize most color schemes to create the mood you want.

Colors and Atmosphere

Pastels and Neutral Colors:

These colors are useful to create a sense of space and calm. Neutral colors help create a sophisticated modern look and will go with many different décor styles.

Primary Colors:

Bright basic colors can complement a contemporary room as well as adding cheerful accents to a room featuring cottage furniture. The mood is casual and informal.

Rich and Deep Colors:

Deep reds, greens and purples go well with antique décor schemes and dark woods. Their opulence can create a sensual effect that may be ideal for the bedroom.

Earthy Colors:

Depending on the depth of color, these colors too can help create a warm and sensual atmosphere.

Blue and White:

Blue is commonly chosen for bedrooms because it is a cool, calm color that fosters a sense of serenity and tranquility.

Black and White:

High contrast black and white color schemes suit rooms with unfussy furnishings, producing a cool, sophisticated look.

Browns and Burgundies:

Traditional master bedrooms are often frilly and feminine, perhaps with a 'boudoir' look. Deep, dark colors can create a more neutral or masculine atmosphere and an elegant feel.

Lighting, Color and Mood

If color is crucial to creating atmosphere, it is in turn dependent on lighting, both natural and artificial. Light can bleach or deepen colors and dramatically alter a room's atmosphere of. If using blues in a cool room, choose shades with more warmth. Similarly, if using yellows in a warm room, go for cooler shades.

Colored lights are one way of manipulating mood in a room without necessarily painting and changing soft furnishings. The right light can turn a bedroom that is neutral and cool by day into a room that is full of warmth and sensuality at night.

Selecting An Interior Door

Interior doors do not only bring privacy, but also play a role of interior decoration. But the doors are reflections of your choice and priorities in the house. If you choose full glass door with aluminum or a wooden frame for your TV lounge, this makes your house look bigger, plus the elders can keep a look on the other activities and the house, furthermore it brings light. It is again not only the choice of the individual but also the space available for a particular door fitting. Bedroom doors are usually solid, either in wood or fiber glass, because the purpose is mainly privacy. By installing a 36 inch wide doors, the movement of all the people becomes easy, especially for those with any disabilities.

Accessibility and Doors

INTERIOR DOORS

Whenever you make a new house or remodel the old one, do pay attention on the doors, not only on their style or material, but also the size, particularly for each room and the locks you select. Interior doors come in different sizes, 24, 30 and 36 inch. A 36 inch door makes your furniture and other bigger items move more easily. Hollow doors made of Masonite come with and without the jamb and are very easy to install. Hollow doors are usually primed, but they need to be primed again whenever you paint them. They are available in various finishes, smooth and eight panel simulated wood grain. The negative side of these hollow doors are that they are flimsy and flexible. If you want to install any bathrobe hook, then you will have to use moles to secure it on the door.

The solid wooden doors are more expensive, but also far more secure and reliable. In case you live in any area where the threat of wood termite is, then use teak wood doors. Solid wooden doors are to be varnished and primed, instead of getting them paint, because then it will be of no use buying an expensive wooden door.

Out of so many things, many people forget where the door has to swing, either right or left. So keep in mind this is very important. But generally, and in common practice, doors swing to right, and are closed at the left end. The door leading to garage should be considered of metal, because here the purpose is entirely privacy, security from fire, explosions, and also intruders.

Office Interior Decorating

Like our home, our office or workplace is an important part of our life. There can be little denial of the fact that we spend a major portion of our lifetime in the office.

solid wood interior doors

Based on this observation, you will be able to contemplate how to improve the facilities and design of the office. The concept of the home office is gaining popularity, with more and more people choosing to work from home.

INTERIOR DOORS

If your office is a home-based one, then you need to select the suitable area and plan the interior decorating accordingly. The main criterion for selecting a suitable place for your office is silence. The area should not be disturbed by any other event in the house. Next, choose the suitable interior-decorating scheme.

Whatever interior decorating scheme you choose, you need to allocate enough room for movement and accommodation of all the necessary equipment and furniture. For example, your workstation should not be too crowded or muddled up. You can use smaller objects instead of large ones. For example, you can use old trays as stacks for piling stationery and other rough documents. The chairs and computer tables should be soft but sturdy, with as many compartments as possible. This will save you the much-needed space.

You need to have separate plugs and boards so that the wires and other cords are not messed up. After all, you cannot afford to waste your precious time, struggling with those jumbled knots everyday! You have got other jobs to do.

Talking of a general or commercial office, some guiding factors for interior decorating are freedom of movement, appearance, maximum space utilization, and so on.

There should be a separate workstation for each employee, where he or she can work with ease and comfort. Also, the lighting and air-conditioning facilities should be correctly fitted to cover all sides evenly. There should be enough air circulation through windows, which of course, should be beautifully draped with curtains or blinds. Only if the surroundings are comfortable will a person's mind think freely and creatively.

For an office, starting from the entry point to the cafeteria lounge, interior-decorating ideas must be chosen carefully. Safety is also important in big offices, since a large number of employees work there. So, measures like emergency exits, automatic water sprays in case of fire accidents; fire extinguishers and alarms should be adopted in the designing stage of the building itself.

You can decorate the reception or guest room with beautiful bouquets, which will be refreshing to look at, and spread their freshness all around.

In big factories, interior-decorating ideas can be followed to reduce manual labor. You can opt for low-cost furnishings and furniture.

While framing the structure or design of your office, you can be immensely rewarded in terms of satisfaction and full value for your money, if you seek a professional's help. He will be able to suggest what you need to include and what to avoid.

Types of Pleated Drapes - As Doors Too Get Some

Pleated drapes have been one of the most traditional of curtains, especially complementing furniture and interior decor of the bygone era. However, today such long curtains are the toast of a fashionable home, especially as these not only provide an enhanced elegance but also help maintain the traditional flavor of the interiors better. Recent developments in the interior decor industry suggest that even doors can have pleated drapes, creating an unusual but interesting ambiance to one's home.

interior doors home depot

Such drapery has always scored over the modern-day alternatives like window blinds. This is because the former provides much more freedom as far as colors, fabrics or stylized combinations are concerned, along with easier maintenance. As windows gather the most dirt and moisture-based grime, easier maintenance and cleaning (you just need to vacuum such long curtains once in a while) counts far more than you could have imagined.

INTERIOR DOORS

So what are the different types of pleated drapes that may help you improve upon the ambiance within your home? Listed below are some of the most popular ones:

Silk - Such curtains that have silk as their constituent material is probably the most popular of the lot. This is because silk curtains are usually thick, heavy and opaque, allowing you to enjoy the privacy you need. Moreover, these have a luster and elegance that is matched by no other fabric, effectively enhancing the splendor of your rooms. In addition, silk pleated drapes can complement antique furniture and at the same time look good with modern upholstery in newer homes. Patio Door Hangings - One of the recent trends, even patio doors can do with pleated drapes. Longer than their conventional counterparts, these efficiently protect the interiors of your rooms from uninvited stares from passers-by - an important advantage as patio doors usually have whole-glass panes. Thermal- Thermal pleated drapes are perhaps the best option available if you live in regions that regularly experience extreme temperatures. These thermal palls can help maintain a comfortable temperature, keeping the heat or the bitter cold off your interiors. These also help save considerable electrical energy, which would otherwise have been invested in turning up the air-conditioning or electric heaters.

With the drapery markets on the rise, you will also find a host of other unconventional types of the same from different dealers.

The web is the best place to look for a cost-effective purchase of quality drapery. Firms like ' Half Price Drapes ' have set up shop online to help you choose from the varied styles of pleated curtains available in their vast catalog of products.

Great Ideas For Incorporating Interior Sliding Glass Doors Into Your Home

When it comes to interior sliding glass doors, a number of opportunities exist. For instance, pocket doors made of glass have become an incredibly popular solution. Just as the early version of this type of door made from wood was popular years ago, doors now made of glass have provided a beautiful yet functional solution. Many people are surprised that the pocket type could be made from glass since they slide into the wall but many amazing styles and designs are available. Whether looking for something sophisticated and elegant, doors with a simple and clean look, or sliding doors with character and whimsy, an abundance of options exist.

interior doors prehung

In addition to pocket sliding doors, other styles of glass doors exist. As an example, if you needed to create a room divider between a bedroom and home office but you wanted something unique, you could have sliding variation installed whereby they would be suspended from a track on the ceiling. This type of top-hung style would make it possible to open the space up by pushing the door to the side, or closing the rooms off by positioning the door between the two spaces. Then, to enhance the look, it would be important to choose the right hardware.

INTERIOR DOORS

You might also look into bypass glass doors. Typically, these are used on closets, wardrobes, and even pantries. For functionality, these would simply slide past and behind one another to open them. However, to close, the doors would be adjacent to one another, meaning the doorway or open space is completely blocked. For these to work, tracks would need to be installed on the bottom or top of the door frame. Now, depending on the look wanted, you could choose etched, clear, frosted, or even colored glass.

We also wanted to mention arcadia systems for interior sliding glass doors. While this type of door has been around for years, it remains very popular. Usually, these are rectangular shaped and made of glass. However, one difference between this system and others made of glass is that the sliding door is mounted onto rollers that run parallel to a fixed panel or other object of the same size and shape. By aligning with the adjacent glass panel the arcadia door would be completely open. However, once the door is slid on the track into place, it would close off the space. In most cases, these glass doors are used to create a barrier between an interior and exterior space such as a patio.

One of the most obvious advantages of installing these internal doors in any home is the fact that they are able to significantly improve the aesthetics of the home. Highly regarded for their beauty, interior French doors can be both functional as well as decorative.

interior doors prehung

Although French doors are commonly used externally at the front, back or as patio doors, they are also ideal for use in the interior of your home. You may have your internal French doors fitted in your home office, bedroom, and kitchen or laundry room. These doors may also be selected in order to match your furniture and make a statement in your home.

INTERIOR DOORS

Traditional interior doors are those that are designed with wood mullions. These are ideal for fitting on your way out to the patio in the back yard as well as between the master bedroom and master bath for those who require a larger doorway.

A perfect addition to any home would be internal doors with beveled glass. These may be used between your formal dining room and kitchen, between the master bedroom and master bath, as well as for the opening to the den or home office area. Most of these doors with beveled glass are constructed from light material such as fiberglass and you may also have them pre-hung.

For something a bit more decorative, opt for interior doors with grooved glass instead. These are attractive and allow the light to penetrate through thereby leaving the glass looking like crystal. Because of the versatility of interior French doors, going for this look can significantly improve any section of your home by giving it a very rich and luxurious look.

If you are looking to warm up your home, internal French doors are your best bet. This is because you may open them or leave them closed for some sound privacy while still being able to look into the room. With these types of doors, your home looks more expensive than it actually is.

Interior French doors can be constructed from a variety of wood types including mahogany, pine, cherry and ash. It is possible to find the right type of wood to match the existing interior of your home. By adding a set of interior French doors, you can go a long way in increasing the value and beauty of your home. Interior French doors are available as pocket or pre hung doors and come in a range of prices to fit almost any budget.

By fitting interior French doors you are also able to significantly increase the property value of your home. This is ideal for later on if you decide to resell your home. By selecting interior doors made from good quality materials such as wood and glass, you will be able to ask for a higher selling price for your home. In any case, French doors are known for their durability which means that they are a long term investment that is worth making in any home.

Installing Bedroom Sliding Doors - Some DIY Tips

If you want to install a bedroom sliding door, then you should realize that it is not impossible for the average person. Making the installation a do-it-yourself project is quite a good idea. However, you also should know that if you botch the job, you will be paying for it. A poorly installed sliding door can cause a variety of problems.

interior doors prehung

If you do not think that you are up to the challenge, then you might want to get some expert help. Did you know that the dealer you buy the sliding doors from can actually help you with the installation? Actually, when you go with this option, you can get the installation done in a matter of minutes.

INTERIOR DOORS

Why is getting expert help necessary? Well, installing sliding doors can be complicated in the measuring part. You need to make sure that your door frame is perfectly square and level. This goes the same for the door. Otherwise, you are going to have some problems in the installation process.

With a sliding door, you want to make sure that the structure that will bear the weight of the door, the top frame, will be able to bear the load properly. If the frame is made out of wood, you need to make sure that the wood is properly weatherproofed and will not rot or weaken over time. This is a very important factor to consider because a weak door frame could lead to more serious damage when the sliding door can no longer be supported by the frame.

The actual process of hanging the door also requires perfection. You need the door to be 100 percent square. This allows for the smooth and flawless operation of the sliding door. If you don't think you are up to the challenge, better get a professional.

Measuring is crucial. You need to make sure that the door you are getting is the same size as the frame. You also need to make sure that the door is perfectly square. How do you accomplish this? An easy way for you to do this would be to take the diagonal measurement of the door. If the measurements are equal, the door is squared.

If you do not intend to install the door immediately after you purchase it, you need to make sure that it is protected. You should store it in a dry, well ventilated area. Store it flat, not standing. You need to protect it from moisture, especially if it is a wood door. Why? Because certain types of wood can swell when exposed to moisture and that could mean problems during installation.

When installing the sliding door, you need to make sure that the bottom railing is exactly underneath the door. This can be a hard task to accomplish. Don't rely on your eyesight. What looks exact to you might not look exact to a measuring tape. You need to take precise measurements in order to make sure that the door fits perfectly onto the bottom railing and thus, works perfectly. Installing a sliding door is no joke.

If you truly want to DIY, then the installation of a bedroom sliding door should be done as carefully as possible. It requires that you put in some hard work. If, however, you want convenience at the cost of a few extra dollars, then you should just get expert and professional help.

Decorating With Stiffel Lamps and Lampshades

The Stiffel Lamps and Lampshade In Decorating

lowes interior shutters

The Stiffel lamps and lampshades are an inherent part of most decorators and designers. Manufactured by the Stiffel company, founded by Ted Stiffel in Chicago in Chicago in around 1932. The Stiffel Company has long based its business on the talents of its great designers and specialized in the old world antique style and charm. With an excellence of design and high product standards, The Stiffel Company is known and recognized as a leader in the arena of innovative lamp designs and lighting.

LOWES INTERIOR

I was first introduced to the Stiffel lamps and lampshades when we were furnishing a new home during one of my many career moves. Prior to this time, my lamp experience had been the type of lamp from a K-Mart or if you were really splurging, a furniture store. My wife picked out lamps that I regarded as very expensive. They were also the heaviest lamps I had ever come across. Her reply and justification.."they're Stiffel lamps."

If you are preparing to change the appearance or decor of a room in your room, you should keep in mind the lighting. Changing the lighting in any room can make a dramatic difference in any room. The ambiance can be easily changed by softening the light. This can be accomplished by using one of the "soft white bulbs, such as those by GE. Another way to accomplish this is by changing a lampshade. Most bedrooms have a lamp on each side of the bed. They should be identical lamps to provide a uniformity as well as continuity.

You can use the internet to research the many types of lamps that are available. Sources might include tips by interior designers or decorators. Lamp manufacturers also provide information on their lamps. If you utilize the search capabilities of one of the internet browsers, such as Google or Yahoo, you can immediately have at your finger tips all the information you could ever need. I would suggest that you consider the theme you have in mind for your room whether it be colonial, western, country or antique. Search on each of those terms and decide the path you wish to pursue.

You would need to consider the type of base. Are you interested in metal, or ceramic? Do you want pewter or brass or maybe bronze? All of these have their place. Again, research can help you to an answer. If your interest is in antique, consider visiting an antique mall where many different types of lamps would abound, including those made by Stiffel. There are quite a few such establishments in and around Houston where I live.

Another source might be garage or estate sales. During your search, don't be thrown off too much by the condition of the lamp or lampshade. One caution would be to carefully inspect the wiring and socket. I would even suggest replacing both. A kit can be purchased at a low price from one of your Home Depot or Lowes stores. A lampshade can easily be made like new via recovering the material in the shade. There are many "how-to" videos on YouTube that show how easily this can be accomplished.

As with anything of great popularity, the Stiffel Lamps and lampshades are frequently imitated and passed on as authentic "Stiffel". If I were to suggest ways of determining whether a lamp or lampshade is authentic, I would be remiss since there is no surefire method of doing this to my knowledge. I would look at the quality of material and workmanship. Pick it up, turn it over, and examine it closely. Stiffel lamps are quite heavy and very well made. No one bests Stiffel when it comes to their well made lamps. Ours are close to 40 years old and still have a distinguishing quality that you would be hard put to match or exceed. If you are in a store, look at the dealer's reputation. If possible, talk to satisfied customers of the dealer. When it comes down to it, if you cannot definitively identify your choice of lamp via normal provenance as authentic and it satisfies your needs and planned decor, then go for it. The main consideration of any purchase should be, whether it fulfills the need you have in mind. If the lamp you have in front of you is one you would be proud to have in your home and to display for friends and visitors, that is all that matters.

My name is Rick I was introduced to the Stiffel Lamps after we had purchased a new home in Humble, TX. For me, a lamp was something that provided light to read by. For my wife, it was the type of item to be collected and passed on through our family. I have to admit, they were beautiful.

Proper Order For Painting Interiors, Doors, and Windows

Of course, the question is what do you paint first, after all other work is done and everything is cleaned up and dust removed. The obvious answer is that you begin by painting that which is higher and which can drip down, such as the ceiling. The trouble is that obvious answers aren't always right.

interior doors for sale

It all depends on your plans for the trim. If you're going to be painting your trim (with latex or oil-base paint), then the proper order is as follows:

INTERIOR DOORS

When Painting Trim

1. Paint ceiling
2. Paint walls
3. Paint doors and windows
4. Paint trims around doors, windows, and baseboards.

If, however, you're going to be staining your trim, then a different plan of action is in order. It looks like this:

When Staining Trim

1. Stain all trim, preferably before installing it. Use sanding sealer to raise the grain; then sand and varnish the trim.
2. If trim is already in place, stain as above, allow the stain to dry, and mask the trim.
3. Paint ceiling
4. Paint walls
5. Paint doors and windows
6. When all the paint is dry, either put in trim or remove masking from existing trim and touch up as necessary.
Remember that, if you get paint on the trim, you will have to sand it carefully-a tedious job-before you can restain it. Therefore, you want to do the painting and the staining separately.

What's the Proper Procedure for Painting Doors and Windows?

For doors, start at a top corner and work your way across and down. Use a brush and be sure that you work quickly to avoid having the paint dry. It's much harder to paint a glossy acrylic latex on a door than a glossy oil paint.

Beware of backpainting a door with acrylic latex. This common practice involves painting the entire door with a roller, then using a brush to smooth out the paint and give it "brush marks." The problem is that acrylic latex dries quickly and unless you work fast, the bottom of the door (the last place you'll be working) will be dry before you get to it, leaving brush or roller marks.

For windows, particularly French windows (with lots of small panes of glass), painting can be a real hassle. You'll need to use a small (1-inch) trim brush for the dividers. You can try masking the glass, but that will take longer than the actual painting. Instead, use a plastic putty knife, found in paint stores, as a shield. Hold it against the surface you are painting to keep the paint away from the glass.

If you use a shield, you'll have to clean it off with a rag after each use, else some paint will get behind it and onto subsequent panes. Usually a little paint won't hurt. You can clean it off quickly with a rag, or come back later on and remove it with a razor blade. Beware of window glass that has a rough surface. It will be almost impossible to remove any dried paint from the glass.

Wear eye protection when painting. Getting a drop of paint in the eye, particularly oil-base paint, can be very painful and could damage the eye.

Proper Order For Painting Interiors, Doors, and Windows

Paint rollers play an important role while painting. If you chose a wrong paint roller, you might end up with a mess. You should really learn how to choose a good paint roller and also how to paint windows and pipes which is not an easy job but doable.

Teens Bedroom Interior Design Ideas - Three Design Tips For Small Rooms

Is your teens bedroom located in a small room and you could use some help with interior design ideas? First, and most importantly, teens like to spend time in their own rooms, and if the space is small, you'll benefit from knowing a few decorating methods that will make your teen appreciative of their special place.

6 panel interior doors

Tip #1: Eliminate the clutter to make the room appear bigger.

INTERIOR DOORS

When a small room has large pieces of furniture that are juxtaposition with not even one inch of extra space, your teen will feel uncomfortable and cramped in the room. When a room is small and there is no design for storage, then clothes, books, papers, and things of all kinds tend to get piled up on top of each other; clutter is the result.

Tip #2: Choose wall colors that will make the room feel more spacious.

To create the illusion of more space, you don't have to use light-colored paint or wallpaper. You can use monochromatic decorating schemes, or various hues of one color family. Or, you can paint one wall blue and another wall green, which will create an equal intensity of calmness. Likewise, if you decorate with light-colored furniture and accessories, the space will feel bigger.

If using color seems scary to you, then here are a few design hints. When you paint two of the walls a light color and two of the walls a deep color, the deep-colored walls will look as if they're farther away than the light walls.

Paint that has a blue-gray color to it will make the room look as if the walls are receding; thus giving the impression that the room is larger than it really is.

The cool colors of purple, blue and green will also make a small room appear larger.

Tip #3: Consider using the principles of Feng Shui to decorate your teen's room.

Simply stated, Feng Shui is a method of placing furniture in such a way that it allows the chi (energy) to easily flow throughout the room. For example, a bed would be situated away from the door to give the room a bigger appearance.

There are many design advantages to the Feng Shui approach. If you search with your favorite browser for the term Feng Shui or Bagua Map, you will find pages of pictures, diagrams and explanations that will help you utilize a room's small space.

Interior Design Ideas - Entrance Hall Design Tips

The old adage 'You never get a second chance to make a first impression' is a reminder of the importance of the entrance to our home - the introduction to ourselves and to how we live. It is from here that we welcome the world, and leave the first (and last) impression with family, friends and sundry visitors.

interior doors for sale

Outside it may be dark, cold and hostile, but inside we offer warmth, light and comfort and, whether the hall be grand or humble, this is the message we would like to convey upon opening our front door. Probably because so many are dark, small and badly designed, hallways are often considered a waste of time. But with a little help from some interesting decorations and clever lighting, this unloved space can become our welcome sign to the world.

INTERIOR DOORS

The range of floorings suitable for an entrance hall are numerous and offer wonderful opportunities for decorative treatments In a traditional home, hard floorings such as stone flags, marble, terracotta tiles or wood are all fitting choices. Should you be lucky enough to live in a Victorian house you may well find some marvelous encaustic tiles beneath a more modem covering and their colors may provide you with the key to your scheme.

Carpeting is also acceptable, but do ensure that a door mat (preferably set within a well so that its surface is flush with the rest of the floor covering) is installed at the entrance to prevent dirt being trampled all over the house.

Lighting plays an important role in setting the mood in an entrance hall. An exterior light (perhaps a lantern for a traditional home and a downlighter for a more modem approach) will signal your presence and guide the visitor to your door. In the hall itself a good level of light is needed and this should be directed towards whatever you have chosen to highlight - a beautifully stenciled floor, a piece of sculpture on a plinth or a massive vase of fresh flowers: the choice is yours.

Table lamps offer a very homely, soft light, while a floor-standing uplighter behind an impressive plant will produce shadows that dance across the room.

The furnishings you include in this room will very much depend upon the space available - what you want to avoid, at all costs, is anything that will hinder the circulation of traffic through this 'terminal'. Important items to include are: somewhere to set down mail/newspapers/house keys and so on; a receptacle for umbrellas; a place to hang coats; and, space permitting, at least one chair.

If coats are to be stored in a cupboard, remember to ensure that this is ventilated (louvered doors are perfect) to help air damp clothing. A wall mirror is also very useful for last-minute adjustments and this will have the added benefit of introducing a feeling of space and light into what otherwise might be a rather dim area. Chair backs will be highly visible against the walls, so choose furniture for its decorative quality.

Modern Closet Door Dimensions

Modern closet doors are often seen as an easy choice for helping to bring your interior rooms up to date. From sliding or mirror paneled doors to louvered and frosted glass doors there are many options to choose from. Depending on your interior area, bifold doors or dividers, even organizers or divider systems can be used. The location in the interior of your home will also dictate the type of modern closet doors you would need, or would like to show off your stylish flair with.

Modern closet doors offer a wide array of styles and colors to help update your closets. Many people do this type of redecorating to be different, and add items such as windows to closets or even use them as a fashion statement. Sliding doors of the past or louvered doors are being traded in for contemporary dividers and organizers with a frosted glass look for a more open appearance. Remember that just because you trade up the interior door for a better model does not mean you should keep the same hardware.

INTERIOR DOORS

Hardware for doors varies, as many remodeling professionals will tell. Sliding doors offer a track much like bifold doors. Frosted glass doors are generally fashioned in the same way as an entrance door to a home and requires a set of wall mounted hinges and pins. The prices for additional hardware will vary based on the depot or location you purchase them from, as there are many options to choose from. Many interior doors are not sold with the hardware they require, and therefore you will have to purchase this separately at your local store. Brass or gold hinges are more expensive pieces of hardware than the aluminum or nickel hardware options. Therefore the depot you purchase the contemporary or modern closet doors from should be checked for corresponding hardware.

Any time a new door is being purchased, make sure to have the dimensions of the old doorway. Sliding doors have different dimensions than bifold doors or dividers, even doors with windows. Many contemporary doors are smaller than was previously made, therefore it may be required that a different type of door be used than what you are interested in. It may also be required that walls or a walk way be installed along with a new doorway so that the new contemporary door will fit the dimensions.

When using modern closet doors, it is advised that organizers and divider systems be used to make room. Even though there is a new door on the front of the closet, the fact that the new door could have windows or frosted glass would allow visitors to see the contents. This would mean that a clutter would be visible unless organizers or divider systems would be needed. For the best outcome, modern closet doors should be compared. From prices and hardware to different door systems and extras such as windows, the options are endless to bring your interior up to date with new modern closet doors.

Rough Openings For Doors

the rough openings right. Items that determine what the
height of your opening will be are floor finishes and the
use of underlayment. Door widths will stay constant with the
size of a standard door.

In new construction most doors are hung after the floors are
installed. This allows flooring contractors (tile, hardwood,
vinyl, laminate) to lay their flooring products without
making tricky cuts around door jambs. It also makes for a
neat and clean door installation. Exceptions to this are
carpeted floors. Doors are hung before the carpeting is
laid. When doors are hung in carpeted areas, its a good idea
to shim them up 1/2", putting a shim under each jamb leg.
This eliminates the need to cut the doors down after the
carpet is installed.

LOWES INTERIOR

For a 6' 8" high door (80 inches) I like to frame my rough
opening height at 82 3/4". This allows room for all the
situations mentioned above. If your header material is a
double 2x12, holding it to the top plate will give you that
height.

Rough openings for door widths are pretty much standard. The
rough opening width is 2 inches wider than the door itself.
this allows room for the door jambs which are usually 3/4"
thick. This gives you approximately 1/2" of play and shim
room when installing a prehung door. For a 36" door (3' 0")
the rough opening width would be 38". Here are the most
common door sizes and their rough openings.

Door Size Rough Opening Size

2' 0" x 6'8" -26" x 82 3/4"

2' 2" x 6'8" -28" x 82 3/4"

2' 4" x 6'8" -30" x 82 3/4"

2' 6" x 6'8" -32" x 82 3/4"

2' 8" x 6'8" -34" x 82 3/4"

2' 10"x 6'8" -36" x 82 3/4"

3' 0" x 6'8" -38" x 82 3/4"

To figure the rough opening for double doors or french
doors, take the door size times 2 and add 2". The most
common sizes for exterior doors are the 2'8" and the 3'0"
doors. The 2'8" is usually used for the back door and the
access door from the garage. That size door for exterior use
is being used less these days because of the size of
appliances and furniture. Exterior doors with sidelights and
sliding patio doors rough openings vary from manufacturer to
manufacturer. These should be verified and gotten from the
supplier.

Getting the rough openings right the first time keeps the
sawzall in its carrying case and having to change the
opening after the walls are drywalled and painted.

Soundproofing On a Budget

Soundproofing your home does not have to cost a fortune. If you are under new construction we all know that money it tight. There are many common hardware store items that can be used for soundproofing that won't break the bank. Most people don't think of sand as a soundproofing material, but it actually a very good for soundproofing. If your walls are re-enforced, you can use sand in the stud cavities as a soundproofing material. You must be sure that your walls can withstand the weight of the sand. Always use refined or purified sand, not common beach sand that could cause mold or have other bacterial in it that will cause you problems down the line.

Let's say you are in the middle of new construction on your new home and you know that one of the rooms is going to be your new home theater. You want that room soundproofed but you budget is already stretched to its limits. Did you know that you can use common rolled roofing material from Home Depot or Lowe's? Rolled roofing is what is generally used on buildings like chicken coops and other roofs where aesthetics is not an issue but stopping leaks is. Rolled roofing generally comes in 30' long rolls and is 3' wide. I hear the little wheels in your brain spinning at a hundred miles and hour. What am I going to do with all this rolled roofing material? Well, I'm glad you asked. One of the best soundproofing agents on the market today is mass loaded vinyl, (MLV for short) Mass loaded vinyl is a high grade vinyl material that is impregnated with barium salts and silica to give it the same soundproofing properties as lead sheeting without the hazards associated with lead.

LOWES INTERIOR DOORS

Now MLV can cost from .25 to .00 per sq ft and when you are building your new dream home that just might be beyond your budget. So now enters the rolled roofing material. I am suggesting that you stretch the rolled roofing material across the studs or the joists if you are soundproofing your ceiling. You will staple or nail the rolled roofing directly to the stud structure like a membrane across the face of the studs. The next section of rolled roofing should overlap the first piece by at least 1". It is essential to caulk the over lap with an acoustical caulk (hey you have to buy something from the soundproofing guy for giving you all this free advice, right?). The acoustical caulk can be purchased from any reputable soundproofing company like Acoustical Solutions, Sound Isolation Company, or Soundproofing America. Any of these companies will carry a good quality acoustical caulk and can ship it to you. Now back to our soundproofed walls. Once you have the rolled roofing in place and you have caulked the 1" over lap, you will also need to caulk around the entire perimeter of the newly installed rolled roofing membrane. There is a little saying we have in the soundproofing industry, "Caulk is cheap". I think you get the pun. The point is, use as much caulk as you need to seal every seam gap or crack in your soundproof membrane. You want this roofing material to be as sealed and air tight as possible. Now seeing as the rolled roofing does not have the same soundproofing horsepower as MLV, I would strongly suggest a second layer of the rolled roofing be applied to each wall and to the ceiling area that you that you are soundproofing. Stagger the seams wherever possible This is a small investment to have a soundproof room for your home theater or simply a quiet place to study.

Once you have your 2 layers of rolled roofing installed on your walls and ceiling and everything is caulked liberally, it is time for the finished layer of drywall. I would suggest installing a layer of 5/8" fire code drywall to finish off your soundproofing project. Don't forget to tape mud and paint the finished drywall.

Now finally I would like to say a little bit about the acoustical caulk. Acoustical caulk is a cheap commodity when compared to the cost of other soundproofing agents, but it is one of the most essential parts of any soundproofing endeavor. Buy a good acoustical caulk and not some cheap silicone caulk. We are already being frugal with the soundproofing material; lets not skimp on the caulk. A good acoustical caulk is OSI-175 SC caulk or Tremco Smoke and Sound caulk. Both of these caulking compounds possess superb acoustical properties. If you have questions about acoustical caulk call one of the online soundproofing companies, they will be glad to help you.

Once the drywall is up and the rolled roofing is completely covered, you will discover that you have a well-soundproofed room and you did it a half the cost of using the professional soundproofing agents. That being said, today's modern soundproofing products are extremely effective and I feel very reasonably priced compared to other specialized building materials. In this article I just wanted to show that there are other ways to soundproof a wall or ceiling with out using the more costly professional soundproofing agents. I hope this narrative has been informative; it was a pleasure writing it, as there is so little information out on the net about soundproofing. Once again, this is Dr. Bob...Out!

Office Interior Decoration

Interior decorating for an office is one thing most people employ an expert to do on their behalf. Frequently, an interior designer does the initial designing as well as some decorating if the building is new. Nevertheless, if the building is new and the office is designated as the individual tenant's obligation to decorate, then that is another story.

solid wood interior doors

Interior decorators can offer swatches on upholstery items, palates of paint samples along with other samples for workplace décor as well as furnishings. They use modern furnishings, art deco, antiques, folk artwork and several other art items in order to encourage a comfortable office space unique to the actual client's wishes. The designers provide numerous options to match the requirements of the client and try to bring the components of the area together with the decorations requested by the clients.

INTERIOR DOORS

Interior decorators focus on things like curtains and window blinds, artwork items, buying furniture and watching for particular pieces of art that would highlight the floor space and office space generally to give visitors to the office a warm and inviting feeling. Depending what type of office space is required by the client is determined by how much furniture is going to be made available and can also help figure out what kind of furniture to purchase.

For pediatricians, for instance it might be wise to have a dedicated area for children with a TV as well as VCR or DVD player available complete with overstuffed chairs along with other comfortable furnishings. Lawyers would not require lots of various furnishings pieces spread throughout the office; actually their office furniture could even be more for elegance than for comfort simply because wait times are rarely long in an attorney's office. A psychiatrist's office might consist of lots of various furniture pieces but should absolutely be decorated in earth tones as well as neutral colors. Someone who is a consultant for businesses might get by with lots of primitive folk art.

Interior decorating a workplace differs from decorating a home. You do not just want to have your requirements met but you want your office personnel to feel warm and welcomed at their job and also you want the visitors to the office to feel totally welcomed by the decor plus the individuals who work at the office. Understand your clientele and know what they'll want and what they will expect once they come into your office for a visit. Then, communicate that to the interior designer who's taking care of decorating your office.

A Guide on Choosing Interior Paint Colors

There are many different factors that go into choosing interior paint colors. Things such as a certain style you are trying to accomplish or trying to match a piece of furniture in the room can all affect the choice you make for the paint color of the room. Even with so many factors that influence the actual color of paint that you may choose, there are certain guidelines that you should follow when picking interior paint colors.

Don't Rush Into a Paint Color Choice

INTERIOR DOORS

Thousands of different interior paint colors are available, so one should not rush into a decision without properly planning it out. Visit your local hardware or paint store and gather paint chips in whatever colors that catch your eye or that you like for the room. Make sure that you get a variety of chips as things can look very different when you get home and look at the color in the room.

When you do get home with your paint chips be sure that you not only just hold them up on the wall, but you walk around with them to compare them with furniture, the flooring, and windows. You want to make sure that the color is well suited to everything in the room that you plan on keeping in the room when you are done remodeling it.

You may also want to ask for opinions from other people on the colors when you have it narrowed down if you are having trouble picking a color. They may see something that you don't.

Make Your Own Interior Paint Color

If you really can't find a paint color that you absolutely love for a room, then you may want to consider making your own paint color. Most paint stores now offer custom colors where they will match a color for you. This means that you can bring in a painting or fabric swatch from your room and have them match a color. Sometimes this may cost you more in the long run, but may be worth it to get the style that you desire from your room.

Choose an Interior Paint Finish

The next step after you have decided on an actual color for your paint, you need to pick what type of finish you want. The finish of the paint will affect the way that the paint looks. It can even make some paint colors look darker or lighter depending on the type of finish that you choose.

· Flat Finish - This type of finish is a matte or duller finish. This is a good type of finish if you want to camouflage imperfections since the light will not reflect off the paint. This type of finish is not the best choice for a room with a lot of traffic as they are harder to clean than other finishes.

· Eggshell Finish - This paint finish has a small shine to it just like an eggshell. Eggshell finishes are popular since they are easier to clean and still have some shine to reflect the light in the room.

· Satin Finish - This finish has a small shine to it as well but with a smoother appearance. Satin paints do well with rooms that have high traffic since they are easier to clean.

· Glossy - This finish is as exactly as it sounds. It has a very high gloss or shine to it. There are also semi-gloss finishes that have a little less shine than a glossy finish. A glossy finish is most commonly used for accessories like trim and doors rather than on a whole interior wall.

Even though the color of a room can be changed quite easily, you want to make sure that you do your best to pick an interior paint color that fits your style as well as is something that is easy on the eyes. When you change the paint color of a room, it can truly change the whole entire look of the room.
